I love this, Dana! Especially the "what am I hungry for?" question. I have been pondering this a lot in the new year, and though I don't yet have an answer, my perception of food and nourishment is continually evolving.

Must they be fresh? The West Coast is sadly short on cranberry bogs.

Not many comments here, but still, I'm posting a query: I am house sitting and have pounds of pears (some little and seckel, others big) that I need to do something with. Canning? Compote? Cakes? Would be fun to do something I could share with owner upon return and/or give as holiday gifts.

I hate walking into my kitchen and finding my roommates have left it in ill repair. I don't mind cleaning if it is my mess, but when I have to clean up for other people before I get to cook, it does take a smidgen of joy away. I am working on lessening my kitchen protectiveness. :)

French toast brioche, lazy brunch with friends, and sun (in San Francisco!) Tomorrow I may have to labor, though.

I agree about freezing. But as an author with an impending deadline, I would rather have stuff in the freezer than takeout. Sometimes even pulling together the energy to figure out fresh/last minute is too much. Thus, this is a super helpful list for me. Thank you! PS I have had good luck with soups in the freezer, but they aren't summertime fare....

I was like you Dana, unproductive for all sorts of good (and bad!) reasons. The past couple of weeks I have kicked it into gear. I made plum and peach jam, and am hoping for another batch this week. I have yet to ponder the savories. But jam is such a good treat, and great gift, so if this is all I do, it's enough.

Oh, I just made regular plum jam over the weekend. Am in search of more late summer canning projects -- whole plums? Apricot jam? Other ideas?

Thanks, a lot of favorites listed above, but some new titles to look for two. I am actually just completing a book about M.F.K. Fisher -- will be out in February 2011 -- maybe it will make next summers reading list!

My lunch, almost every day. It never gets old. But its essential to have the right bread. My favorite is Acme walnut bread, toasted dark. Yum.
