Cosigning for the Seattle AT meetup as a Seattle transplant from the very friendly and open city of Asheville, NC almost two years ago. Seattle is a hard city to make friends in, and for me it's only been the last six months or so that friendships have started to flourish.

I just discovered this whole adding-chemicals-to-tasty-things today at a Taiwanese restaurant. I had garlic noodles that smelled strongly of ammonia. Turns out it was a flaw in the noodle-making, but not harmful.

Still...didn't eat them...

Now that I live around the corner from TJ's I'm actually taking the time to learn what's honestly a good bargain/value/tasty vs. what's novel.

I love their nuts and dried fruit, as mentioned above. Some of their wines are fabulous, some are downright terrible.

I've only tried their cheddar/gruyere blended cheese and found it to be awful. Have my eye on some brie to try.

Love their pita crackers.

Mm, I love their hand soap - I've used the Lemon Verbena (!) and the Lavender. Really excited about the Honeysuckle.

@YoJess Yep -- my mom always told me to use salted butter. It was only once I started cooking and baking more and reading cookbooks more thoroughly that I realized how much better UNsalted was. Then again, mom's a salt freak.

To echo what's been said above: Unsalted gives you more control over what you are preparing and will go rancid more quickly because there's no salt to act as a preservative.

I like Cabot's and Organic Valley's Cultured Unsalted Butter. mmmm....

I'm in the "buy vanilla beans on Ebay" camp and have been pleased thus far. I love to make Amanda Hesser's Vanilla Bean Loaves which uses a whole bean in the cake and another in the glaze. Also makes great vanilla sugar and we're experimenting with making vanilla extract from cheap vodka. Inexpensive vanilla beans open up a whole new world!

Also -- I'd love to know more about how folks think that moths can get into airtight containers. To my knowledge the larvae are already in the food product somewhere. Again, I have not had a single problem since transferring all grains to airtight containers.

Another question -- how long do the larvae live and do they always hang out around food? As I mentioned, some randomly show up in my bathroom (off the kitchen) and it has baffled me.

I too had the pantry moth problem last summer -- I traced it back to a very old sack of flour hiding in the back of my cabinet. Since then I switched to buying only in bulk a small amount at a time and keeping items in airtight containers (I use square containers that I picked up at Target and glass ones from IKEA that seem to work well thus far).

I have not had an infestation since, although lone pantry moths will show up in my bathroom from time to time for no reason. Since I do not have air conditioning, in the hot summer I keep grains and sugar in the fridge or freezer. Friends laugh, but it's worth it now to save a hassle later.

Sounds delicious. Last week (at a lovely restaurant in Portland, OR) I tried strawberries paired with Roquefort mousse. Amazing. I don't often think of strawberries being paired with something on the savory side, but it worked really well.

The Asheville City Market opened April 18, but I wasn't able to make it until the following week. So much beauty! Wonderful produce, vendors galore. Lots in season here in the south. I put together a little picture story of my adventure, which can be viewed here: Full (Gastronomic) Tilt.
