For short-term storage, just flip the canning lids upside down and tighten the lid. That way the lining isn't in contact with the food.

Obviously, this won't work for canning...

Homemade pizza, macaroni and cheese, Chicken in Milk, blondies...all good. Batch of whole wheat bread from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day...not so good.

I'm in the mood for chili today.

@Kathryn1123 - I was cleaning out the freezer the other day and found an insect specimen, courtesy of my daughter.

I have six old bread loaf size Rubbermaid containers that I use to organize spices by category (common, herb, hot, sweet, misc, salt/pepper). My spice cupboard isn't directly over my prep counter so this makes it easy to bring the tub of spices I frequently need over to where I'm working.

This works well for my kitchen space. It would work better if I would label all of the lids, instead of just a few.

Thanks for all your efforts! I know a ton of work goes into an update.

I'm another one who is having trouble. Something about the combination of the bright background, font and font size feels visually glaring to me. Usually I appreciate a larger font size but taken altogether, when I cruise over here my automatic reaction is to back up about eight inches so viewing feels visually more comfortable.

My lighting and window situation is nothing to brag about but the previous owners put a skylight in the center of the kitchen prep area. I love it!

I've also used that recipe for carmelized onions in small puff pastry shells for appetizers.

I'm just back from my nearest store and they were opening up the alcohol gift packs, seperating out the glasses, and putting the alcohol on the shelves. They've been doing this for years now.

We added a new cookie to our list of "keepers"--Aunt Sis's Strawberry Tarts from the Gourmet Cookie Book. Strawberry is our everyday jam and it seemed too plain for a special cookie so I played around with the recipe. Rolling them in sugar, flattening with a glass, and filling the depression with Smucker's Triple Berry jam made a lovely little cookie.

Slice and toast crusty rolls and cover one side with thinly sliced pork. Cover with grated apple, honey mustard dressing and cheddar slices.

Or instead of rolls, butter bread and grill as a panini.

Ricotta filled shell and sauce I had in the freezer.

I made Risi e bisi for supper last night. I ran out of regular rice and substituted brown rice and it was so much better than usual and will be the standard from now on.

Today it was unseasonably warm and I made cheeseburgers on the grill! I don't hesitate to grill out when it's cold but it was such a warm day the grill just called out to me. ;-)

Tonight I made up my sugar cookie dough. Tomorrow is the first of the events I need to send cookies to.

The baking frenzy starts Wednesday when the kids are home.

I have an older version of this battery operated sifter and I really like it. It's plastic and I didn't think it would last but I've had it for years.

Thanks for the heads-up--I'll be sure and do a trial cookie. I haven't tried them but I'm going to. We usually do our baking at the last minute when my kids are out of school so they can take part too.

Just wanted to add that I saw Peppermint Puffs at Fresh Market packaged in bulk near the checkout. They looked like a softer mint.

My fondest baking memory is making cut out sugar cookies.

My fondest eating memories involve rum balls and a German cookie called spitzbuben. The latter is a nutty shortbread with jam spread between and dipped in lemon glaze.

My aunt always made a huge tub of pfeffernusse, but I never loved those as a child.

Jams, jellies or butters that people wouldn't ordinarily buy have gone over well here. ie Peach/Plum/Ginger Jam, Hot Pepper Jelly, Corn Cob Jelly, Caramel Spice Pear Butter, Apple-Lemon Marmalade, etc.

Canned chutneys and relishes would be fun too!
