Awesome. I have the same kitchen cart that I painted green to match my kitchen decor. Hooray for Ikea hacks!

I painted and upholstered the seats on my Ikea kitchen chairs. It's a good beginner's project idea, cause you won't feel bad if you ruin it. If you paint though - LOTS of primer is needed.

I think you need to change your frame of mind about the place. Instead of thinking about it as a remodeling job gone wrong by your landlord, think of the layout as "bohemian" or "european." Make it the clever place you know it can be. And start with a floor plan. :)

As a Registered Dietitian, I THIRD the suggestion to read Ellyn Satter! "child of mine" is a guide for this.

Also remember, your kids are smart. They won't let themselves starve. Making special meals for kids that hold out on new foods, teaches them that holding out is a very effective strategy.

I worked in a preschool kitchen where meals had a variety of foods. if a new food was offered like salmon, a familiar and nutritious food was also offered. The kids had to try the new food, but at least there was something at the table they could eat. It was offered initally there was no "special meal" connation attached to it.

Also, if your kid wants gogurt, make him save up allowance to buy it. You're not depriving him of yogurt if you offer the quality stuff. If he really wants the junk, he needs to make a value assessment. This trick works for checkout stand treats. A nine year old can make this value judgement in a way that works to his advantage. ;)

I once made a valence for a kitchen window out of a couple of dense tea towels that I bought at world market. All I did was sew a rod pocket in the width of the curtain bar, I didn't even sew the towels together.
It was enough to frame the window, in colors that coordinated with my kitchen. And because the towels were durable, I could wash them if they started to get gross.

Hope this helps

....or... best of both worlds: paint and upholster. I did that to the chairs from my Jokkmokk set. And yes, @Jacob, the fabric does have a bird in it. :P

this is one of the best house tours I've seen in awhile. instead of going on a spree at urban outfitters or world market, this guy tailored DOWN a collection and it really looks like he used a lot of principles in the Apartment Therapy book.
I'm going through the pics again. must. learn. more. :)

I'm having a hard time letting go because this time last year I had almost no furniture and I've spent the whole year adding. I still haven't quite achieved my dream yet, so the thought of purging. Eh, I'm not ready.

I have a ton of books, but I've been cutthroat before.

Maxwell,
I read the book a year ago and I've kind of been living by it as I decorate my apartment. You're much funnier than I imagined good job on the video.

I used to work at Whole Foods, so I'm no stranger to eco cleaners. been using them for years.

Ikea stuff painted and upholstered. Call it an ikea hack if you want. It wasn't a hack so much as it was finishing what they started. :)

I'm excited for this, and I totally signed up. But... how does this translate to "One Room Remedy"? I still have an unfurnished room in my apartment that I was saving for last.. Perhaps I will work through the cure on my own.

I think the thing to consider is that a mirrored dresser might not stand out against a white wall. Are you planning on doing anything to increase the color around it such as an area rug or a curtain nearby?
Don't worry about doing the "wrong" thing, dear. If you own it, everyone else will think you're brilliant. Case in point, my couch is pineapple yellow and my drapes are olive green paisley. Everyone always comes over and talks about how much they love it. :)

I think you have to be very patient to "get" ikea. And very choosy. It's easy to go for the $40 laminate bookcase. I have a lot of Ikea stuff, and I've always selected pieces made out of real wood. I know there are higher quality furnishings, but I'm a girl on a budget. I have a table and chair set that I bought right out of college. "Jokkmokk" is what it's called. The chairs drove me nuts, so I filled in the screws with wood filler, sanded, primed and painted. I took the seats off and used the foam from the seat pads and upholstered them. Sounds like a lot of work I know, but I'm pleased with the finished result. See link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8644829@N02/5076924003/

I just hosted a baby shower this weekend too. My food wasn't typical baby shower fare, it was all the favorites of the guest of honor.

1) veggie tray- super simple and easy to transport, plus people love it.
2) fruit salad- was going to make "fruit kabobs" but decided to calm myself down.
3) homemade mac and cheese, which sat in the oven in a casserole dish until we were ready, you could transport this and cut it into squares
4) Grilled chicken breasts (I didn't cook them, i bought them at whole foods and then heated them in the oven with the mac and cheese).

This plus the cake and I was done. It was hard to calm myself down from wanting to make fancy appetizers or "ladies luncheon" sandwiches. Just think, what are the guest of honor's favorite foods? How can you translate that into a light lunch?

I love the idea of this challenge. When I was studying to become a dietitian, I had to make a similar menu for a project. It's a tight squeeze, but can be done.
Miss Eng obviously possesses something many people on food stamps do not- cooking skills and cooking implements, and the ability to get to stores that are not a corner market/bodega and get her healthy food home.
Many neighborhoods where the population that receives food stamps is high are also lacking in grocery stores.

I'm shocked that people have that much storage space for all that holiday decor. Perhaps because I have an apartment where closet space is at a premium.
I didn't buy holiday decor for years because money was also tight and it seemed wasteful for something I get a couple weeks use out of once per year.
Halloween: I was planning a cardboard cut out skeleton on my front door and a black light or two.
Christmas: Last year I lined my picture window in my living room with colored lights. This year I will add a small tree. Which means I need to buy ornaments, finally.

Prior to discovering Apartment Therapy I don't know how I lived in my home. I loved to be there, but it wasn't warm and it didn't make me happy. Furthermore, I was so afraid to make a bold decision I would regret, that I lived with a bunch of boring decisions I actually did regret.

So when I moved I got rid of every last one of them. (While simultaneously trying to pay off my credit card). when I made the list of furniture that I was giving away or selling, my boyfriend got nervous and tried to talk me out of it. Too bad I was already quite committed to my decision. :)
My home's evolution can be seen on my flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8644829@N02/sets/72157623355402321/

This is how I did it. (Because I am a nerd). I used the 8 week structure of Apartment Therapy to keep myself from getting off track. I started the year with 8 weeks of DT. Then I assigned 8 week intervals on one room remedies. I buy what I can afford, what I find and determine to be the most important for the room and if I'm not done by the end of the "cure", too bad, I move on.
So far I've done my 8 week "DT", The living room, 4 week "Kitchen Cure", The Bedroom, 4 weeks of attention paid to the bathroom, Now I'm kind of working on my hallway, if you see the pictures you'll understand why.

I must confess, home ec was offered in my junior high and high school and I skipped out. I missed it in junior high because it would have been "uncool" and I missed out in high school because i knew how to cook anyway. My mom had this massive collection of cookbooks and we were forced into a square-meal-at-the-table-with-the-TV-off every night.

I had to take 2 courses in cooking, one was basic and the other was meal / menu prep for my first degree in Nutrition. I was literally shocked at how many of my peers (also seeking degrees in nutrition) had no clue how to cook.

I now have a master's in nutrition. If my local schools were to bring back home ec, I swear to you I'd teach it for free.

I keep soy flour. 1 heaping TB of soy flour and 1 TB water can replace an egg when baking. It's also cheaper than fancy brand egg substitutes and easier to deal with than flax seeds.

I keep it in the freezer because it can oxidize pretty quickly.
