This comes a bit late but maybe someone with the same issue will find my suggestion helpful. I created a shade for this exact issue that can be seen at my FLICKR photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37517326@N04/3450498685/in/set-72157616865486999/

I cut out a ton of felt circles then used hot glue to attach them to a fabric shade that had the correct fitting for the ceiling fixture (exactly like the one shown in the original post) It cost me about 15 bucks total.

I just bought my first home and I am working to find my style. I live in outside San Anotonio on the way to Austin. I have a bit of a focus problem so I tend to kind of do little bits in each room at a time. I have been in the house for 7 months and this is where I am- Visit my Flickr Photstream and give me your advice on how to streamline, or any suggestions you have! I'm a decor newbie and I think the home is starting to look like I am trying too hard but it is only out of my own inability to find a clear vision! HELP!

I do a DIY dryer sheet with a slight modification- I use "green" fabric softener which doesn't have much of a smell and I was never a fan of commercial laundry smells- so what i do is purchase a few of my favorite essential oils or "perfumey" oils and put a couple drops on the wash rag that I soaked in softener, make sure you only put a little bit so it doesn't transfer to your clothes and is completely absorbed and then with the dryer heat the oils heat up and make your clothes smell amazing- another trick is to use a tad bit of running alcohol with the drops of oil and spray it on the rag- the rubbing alcohol will take away any oil factor all together and prevent any oil transfer to clothes but the scent sticks!

Using light and DIY dryer sheets is a MUST for those with high effeciency dryers, if you read the manual it warns against using commercial dryer sheets-

The thing I like best about this is that I loooove perfume and i can coordinate the oil scent with a fragrance I wear- if it has vanilla tones I use vanilla oil and it is like adding another layer to perfume, like using a coordinating soap and lotion- smell lasts much longer and you don;t smell like laundry you just smell good!

I hope you don't mind but I am going to copy this room for my son- alot of the elements I already have vintage cowboy prints, circle decals and fabric curtains- :) I have been looking for something for my sons room for a while and the color will look good with the rest of the house and still make him happy. I was stuck on what to do but seeing your room made me see the potential of what I had and it is as simple as some paint! his walls and furniture will have to be done- I like how the white looks against the wall. We moved and my son is in a smaller room now and his furniture just looks huge and obtrusive in Navy. This was a huge help! Thanks for the ideas!

If i had to say a few quick easy things that would make a big change-

frame the mirror out (you can buy fancy floor and ceiling trim and have the hardware store cut it to be a frame size, apply to mirror with mirror mastic or even velcro if you buy the lightweight trim)

paint- maybe a pale blue/grey

maybe cover the fronts of the drawers with some interesting paper or decal adn paint the wood parts of the cabinets a coodinating color

add simple hardware to cabinets (even the fake drawers)

a simple plant and some fluffy towels

I was in a similar bathroom and I am still in process of remodeling it. I changed out the cabinet fronts adn then painted everything white- at least this way I really thought I was looking at a blank pallette, the 80s look made it seem overwhelming. I got simple sink fixtures (30 bucks a piece at HD) Righgt now I haev a simple black and white look and it is still in process but it helped me see the potential more clearly adn honestly a white bath is rather inviting- when I wanted a spa look I simply added some light green accents, and fluffy towels- recently I started adding some black and white things and it is taking shape. Restoration Hardware and now BEHR make a color called Silver Sage (which are actually really close in color) The BEHR color doesn;t show up online but is part of a new line in stores called BEHR ultra- grab a swatch next time you are there- It is a beautiful gray that almost looks like a green- but it is so subtle- I love it!!
