My boyfriend hates tomatoes, so I make him BLCs - bacon and cheddar on a large leaf of lettuce (he's avoiding carbs). He thinks they are the best sandwiches ever. The lettuce stays pretty crunchy when served immediately.

While it's not an on-demand system, the Zero water filter/pitcher is by far the best (and economical) water filter. It filters out pharmaceuticals, bacteria and heavy metals. I keep a glass on the counter and refill the pitcher as I use it, so that it's always full. I highly recommend it.

I lay bacon on my broiler pan and put it in a cold oven, then turn it to 400F. It doesn't take too long, and the pan naturally collects the grease underneath the bacon. It cooks evenly (with one rotation of the pan, usually). I love this method as it makes for crisp-chewy bacon, and I never have to maneuver molten pieces of meat swimming in lava-grease.

Steel wool packed tightly into holes along the walls and in cupboards will prevent mice from entering a room. It's one of the only materials that they find too sharp to poke their noses through. Buy it in bulk and stuff liberally and tightly (use a pair of scissors to help pack it in).

In the year that we lived in a shack in the country, we had traps, exterminators and cats. While the cats caught the mice at first, the only thing that kept the mice out for good was the steel wool.
