I got the impression that the author was referring to a hypothetical city in the paragraph I've quoted. And in that context, my comment was intended to bring out the point that being a self sustaining and sustainable city does not necessarily imply that the same city needs to be boring and steely and rigid and soul-less.
Now to come to the specific city - Chengdu, lacking personality- that is not because its self sustaining, its a lot of other reasons, particularly as you've pointed out, the fact that it is in China. ..
So don't equate self sustaining, clean, green and planned with soulless and personality-less.. that's all.

Oooh oooh, now that explains a lot. I got this while chopping up some Tindori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccinia_grandis) which I understand is the same family as the squash.
It was painless, just a bit distressing to see the skin peeling off on my palms.. but didn't last more than a day.

If I substitute fresh tomatoes for canned ones (we don't get these too easily here), would it change things too drastically? Would I need to blanch the tomatoes first? Any suggestions?

And why can't this supposedly self sustaining city have things like a "Japanese stationery stores and Middle Eastern grocery stores, Indian ice cream shops, amazing corner stores, museums both grand and quirky, ancient mysterious shops where I'm not entirely sure what — if anything — is for sale, parklets, street art, weird architectural juxtapositions, and thrift stores galore." There doesn't seem to be anything in there that contradicts the self sustaining aspect...

Why does it have to be running water? Thawing under running water just seems so wrong and so wasteful.

@patmac - totally with you on this..

I don't remember my mother ever bleaching her kitchen sink. Neither did my grandmom. Nor my aunts. Nor my mother-in-law... I'm still alive. And healthy. And so is brother, my husband, many many cousins and uncles and nieces and nephews..

Lets stop adding more and more chemicals into our lives and be a little less PARANOID...

FULINLIN - Malayali can be used as a noun or as an adjective - as in

the people of Kerala are called Malayalis (noun)

- and any characteristic pertaining to them is also referred to as Malayali (adjective) - like Malayali cuisine or Malayali families

HMJAMES - yes I agree... sometimes you associate the food with a memory of the place you ate it at, as did the writer.
By calling the dish "Kerala Spiced Peas" , it implies that they were from there?
I just wanted to clarify that this is not a Kerala dish.. or a Malayali dish, to use the correct term...

ermm... I'm from Kerala and I've never heard of, seen or tasted this dish before.. In fact, we don't really use these peas in our cooking, as far as I know...

I'm amused at how this post has made such an issue about a non-issue... No one, not even in the author's experience, has had a problem with a 'mopper' and yet here we have all the moppers up in arms defending themselves.. against what/who?? no one or nothing.. just some imagined non-existent anti-mopping entity.

Ok, this sounds really cool and eco-friendly, but I have to admit that I'm quite sceptical about the whole sustainability angle of this business.

I don't understand how taking perfectly degradable organic waste (read - poo) - which is excellent fertiliser and extremely valuable for recharging soil nutrients - out of the ground, where it supports an entire ecosystem (dung beetles, other insects) and then use up lots and lots of water and energy to convert it into less degradable (as a result of the processing) paper - can in anyway be deemed as sustainable?

Sorry about the ridiculously long sentence..
