If you're getting down, don't go cheap. It's won't last and it's unsustainable. The best down comes from Europe or Canada. If the product is not certified as Canadian or European raised down then the down is from China and if a lower quality. Baffle-box construction is also a must ("box-stitched" is not the same). Companies should also provide you with information about the loft. The higher the loft, the more air between the bits of down and the better the performance.

We have a 'Ultra-light' down duvet for summer from a Canadian company called St. Geneve. (We have a winter weight one too as well as pillows and a featherbead). The down is from Canadian Hutterite colonies and is treated to be hypoallergenic. All our bedding has held up very well but just in case they are covered under warranty as well. I would definitely recommend St. Geneve to anyone interested in upgrading their bedding.

Yuck! I would never use a Mr. Clean eraser in my pots! (or anywhere else for that matter). They are super toxic. I know for certain they contain formaldehyde, which is classified as carcinogenic by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Plus who knows what else.

I found Barkeeper's friend is great for stainless steel, but not so great for my enameled pots. I also have had limited success with the boiling salt method. For enameled pots I make a paste of baking soda and salt and soak it overnight. I find this works best.

we make this all the time in the summer; it's the perfect accompaniment. No need for the skewers - or even the grill pan for that matter - when it gets really hot out we put the tomatoes drizzled with olive oil in a pan and broil them in the toaster oven.

maybe for napping, but this doesn't look very supportive as a sleeping-through-the-night mattress. I would not expect my guests to sleep on this.

This looks dangerous. Those rotating blades are too close to my toes for comfort!

I like the idea, but the handle just doesn't look very comfortable. We have a clip-on flashing LED lamp for our American Bulldog's collar that works quite well.

No matter what you decide, make sure you do LOTS of research on the breed, exercise/attention requirements and common health problems.

This is a very timely post! We are moving to a house in the country in a few weeks and have been wondering what to do with our dog's poop since it can't go in a regular food compost.

It looks like these all operate like mini septic-tanks. Since our new house will be on a septic system, does that mean we can flush our dog doo down the loo?

I love this! Reminds me of Douglas Coupland's "Souvenir of Canada" works.

Our American Bulldog destroys all toys, but has not yet chewed through the Tux. The only problem is that the treats fall out rather easily and our dog looses interest when there is no longer food in it.

Our favorite "eco-toys" are large hemp rope bones. They last a long time and don't stink like the cotton ones.

tip of index finger immersion blender.

Apparently if more than 80% of your finger tip is detached you can't have stitches. Two years late I still have no feeling in my fingertip but it healed quite nicely and the scar is barely visible.

Eve in Hochelaga you can just add a few teaspoons of vinegar to a cup of regular milk as a buttermilk substitute.

As a vegetarian, anything with meat is obviously a deal breaker. Other than that, I'm willing to try pretty much anything...

I thought you weren't supposed to use soap. Mine has developed a 'season' after years of use. I just rinse it with water and dry it in the oven on low heat.

Another vote for the furminator! It really does help with the shedding.

We use our upholstery attachment to vacuum our couch every couple of days. This seems gimmicky to me.

We have a large dog and a very large wire crate for him. I agree that the wire is less hideous, but it still not my favorite focal point. We have a blanket over it and use for folding laundry in our bedroom.

I love this crate, but it looks like it's only for little pups. Wish there were more stylish options for big dogs.

I have the Kitchen Aid mixer attachment, which is basically a frozen bowl and special paddle. It's great. I couldn't justify buying a new appliance devoted just to making ice cream. This system is simple and works like a charm. I keep the bowl in the freezer all the time.
