I like that your oven is old. And that you had dirty dishes in the sink and did not bother to 'declutter' the fridge. This is what a house is supposed to look like when the people in it actually have a LIFE. And kids.

And I also agree with your comments about parents putting things into the proper context for children. I think it's awesome that your daughter probably says, 'Yep, they're boobs... And?'

Um, maybe someone has said this already, but GO MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS. I saw some cards once in a book that were all ready to fill out, tear out, and distribute that simply said, "I am your neighbor. My name is ... I live at... My phone number is... Call me if I can help you." You could accomplish the same thing with index cards. This way, you already know your neighbors, they know you, and when that fellow needs more sugar for kool-aid, he can call first. And kool-aid IS an emergency sugar situation...

wow indeed... my mom just slit a star-shaped hole in the bottom of the duckies and attacked the insides with an old toothbrush dipped in a bleach & water solution... it does not affect the squirt quality at all. but if that's too much trouble, then just toss 'em.

I think it'd be cool if we just expressed our dissatisfaction with a post without the sarcasm... adults should be able to do that. Some of you sound like a bunch of whiney tweens. Grow up or get off AT.

I have a 4-year old and a 2-year old... My bathroom is the ONLY place I can go and actually read in peace between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. because I can lock the door. With that, I simply wish to say that I can have reading material in the bathroom and not necessarily read it while using the bathroom... This is just like judging people for what's in their medicine cabinet which you shouldn't be looking in anyway!

My mom bought those 'old-people' pill organizers for my brother and I (one for each of us), separated the meds into each compartment, and wrote the times we should take the meds with a wet-erase marker. You could do something similar with liquid meds if you buy those individual dosage cups with the lids that snap closed... Measure out everyone's dosages of each med for the day, write the time (and maybe the first initial?) with a wet-erase marker on the lid.

I like it. It looks like you kept it really simple and threw a party that was enjoyable for all ages. My husband at 35 has recently discovered his "inner-cowboy" and he probably would have had a blast! Having everyone present take a picture with a family keepsake was a great idea, too. THAT is probably what your son will cherish the most when he is old enough... the memories you created for him with this party.

And as for the gun thing... so what? He's 1 and his name is GUNnar afterall. Anyone old enough to know that was a picture of a gun should also be old enough to know that guns don't kill people; people kill people. Forget the haters... your heart was definately in the right place!

yeah... this is the kind of thing where if you've tried it before and it worked, it may not work as well (or at all) the next time... i think that they 'learn' from the mistakes of other flies. taking the trash out and bleaching the sink drain do help.

i also put a sheet of transparent fly paper in my kitchen window and to my surprise (delight!), it has worked at attracting the little fruit flies as well as the bigger house flies that like to come in when i'm going in and out of the house. i got it at wal-mart about a year ago... there were four sheets in a slim, green box and it wasn't at all expensive.

Vhision, I laughed out loud at the last part of your comment. I lived in High Point and the surrounding areas for about 5 years and you are exactly right! Some of the downtown furniture showrooms aren't even open at any other time of the year... But market time is CRAZY! I purposely went out of town during the furniture markets just to avoid the madness that took over High Point.

I just wanted to say that after one week, I can already tell a difference in my home. Instead of saving all of my 'curing' for the weekend, I schedule something each night in my planner. Once I put the kiddos to bed, I tackle a project. So far, I haven't been to bed earlier than midnight, but I somehow still feel sooo good in the morning. We're watching tv less and (finally!) just enjoying each other's company more... maybe because we've actually got more room to play. I tried the cure last fall, but I punked out early because I realize now that I was way too critical of my home; I was picking on it. I think in the past few months, I've made peace with it (my hubby bought this house before we were married, so I've never really felt like it was my own) and am now starting to appreciate it for what it is. For me, the cure is not just about fixing what is wrong, but really embracing all that is right with my home... The best to all of you over the next few weeks!

I use a mesh bag that came in a pack of 4 at the dollar store. After bath time, the kiddos put their toys in, pull the string to close it, and hang it from the faucet in the tub. It doesn't take up any room like a basket would and technically, it was only 25 cents!

I've figured out that the longer it takes me to pack up something out of sheer laziness, the less its likely that I really 'need' it... and I'm actually off to Goodwill to donate a bookshelf that I no longer need because I donated a bunch of the books that were on it to my local library for its annual book sale.

I still have nightmares about 'Black Friday' from my days in retail... I can't think of a single thing that I need to buy for myself or anyone else at 4 a.m.

However-- If you find joy in giving, but not in the giving of useless stuff, please visit www.alternativegifts.org. You can pick a project to support in honor of a friend or family member. I am buying a share of home-building materials for a needy family in Nicaragua in honor of my contractor hubby and an educational scholarship for a Kenyan girl from a nomadic family in honor of my mom, a recently retired teacher...

I should mention that I work there, and I don't have nightmares anymore.

My daughter, age 3, has the 'ugly plastic toy bins' in her bedroom, but I don't mind them being in there so much because #1 It's in her room so I don't have to look at it and #2 Because I've labeled each box with a picture of her toys, it makes it much easier for her to find what she's looking for and clean up all by herself. My son, who is 18 months old, has his toys in our living room in pretty, woven storage baskets under the coffee table. He's limited to three baskets at any one time-- one for wooden toys, one for books and soft toys, and one for *sigh* plastic toys... In spite of how organized this may sound, my living room is this sofa times 10 on any given day and while I love AT, I just wanted to thank you for posting what a REAL ROOM occupied by children looks like!
