Just now, I was considering this issue myself for my 3 year old and 1.5 year old. I have two more suggestions, since they are both things I'm currently considering: first is the Kura bed from Ikea which can be a twin bed or flipped to be a low bunk (the bottom mattress on the floor). Second is the Popsicle furniture line, which from reviews I've found seem to be sturdy. They are very simple looking and can convert with kits from twin to midsleeper to bunk. Not terribly cheap, but cheaper and less cluttered looking than some other suggestions above. http://www.popsiclefurniture.com/bunk_beds.html

Just had a pretty negative experience with them, bought one sale thing listed as 'sheets and cases' that turned out to be only a bottom sheet, what a rip off! and then they sent me the wrong color of something else... Darn.

we went with Kerf designs out of seattle:

Substantially more expensive than ikea, but excellent modern craftsmanship out of sustainable plywood. Totally customizable, and a the company is a pleasure to work with.

They now have a DIY system, which is flatpacked and shipped to you. It is easy to install yourself or by a local contractor.

I had a friend who smashed up his concrete backyard and then did some interesting landscaping: a raised deck and a small but totally adorable "rolling" lawn. The used concrete was stored under the deck and as height for the lawn, with dirt and then sod on top. He also built some very high raised beds around the perimeter and used the smashed concrete underneath as drainage. I have done a bit of the same in my own backyard.

check out the stop-animation cake video...
my friend made a wonderful - and huge - cake for my joint bday party with my cousin. It is masterful, as is the video!

I just measured it. It is about 15" high, 22" long, 16" across. It's a standard big tub-shaped thing.

To start it off I put a lot of shredded newspaper and dried leaves in it, and slowly started adding the foodscraps. I also make sure to add some dried leafy things to the pile if it smells a little or if it is too wet.

I did recently add another bin, so I can rotate and let one "finish" while I add scraps to the other. I stack them and it takes up very little space. I have found it takes 6-8 months for the compost to be totally completed.

Give it a try, and if it doesn't work you can look for a small-scale manufactured composter or get a worm bin. Good luck!

I have a tupperware bin for compost in my tiny backyard. I just drilled many many holes into the top and sides. It works really well, and plenty of worms have found their way in. I just turn it with a hoe every couple of weeks. Very cheap and very easy.

I keep a bag of peanuts around for my garden and house plants... a couple of inches of peanuts at the bottom of a pot works really well as drainage.

I think your best bet would be a welder.

I know a good, reliable, and affordable welder in Brooklyn:
Jose with J & G Ironworks, 347.645.7272

We used him to construct several stair railings and some other projects, including a trellis in our backyard that uses the steel cables.

He actually warned me against the cables for interior railing use (we went with another design), so I might do a bit more research on the cables vis a vis child safety before going with them.

Very easy to paint this kind of graphic by tracing an image on transparency paper and projecting it onto the wall with an overhead projector.
