Aside from this planter—which is, indeed, super beautiful and awesome—Dabito's blog Old Brand New is also totally great. His style is thoroughly unique and he always manages to make all his fab thrift finds work together in an ever-evolving and consistently gorgeous way. It's well-written AND his photos are gorgeous.

Awesome to see him on AT!

Hey, that's my room!

@RyanCN- Trust me, it's WAY WAY more about a fresh coat of paint than white balance and lighting. The paint before was a high-gloss yellow-y white and disgusting.

@mindfeck, suzy8track, and others concerned about the layout: this room really isn't very big and there isn't any space to have it any other way unless I put the bed against the wall. Which I avoid if at all possible.

@peteG- as has been pointed out by a couple people, the blanket was a gift from Pendleton Woolen mills but was nowhere NEAR that expensive. I think they're $200. They do last forever though.

@E.I.F- The second photo was taken after I purchased a wide-angle lens. It does make the room look deceptively large, but it's the only way to get everything in frame.

@burnttoast- Go to the post and you'll see both!

@sagekitten85- It's a George Nelson Saucer Bubble Lamp, size medium.

Thanks, Kathleen!

@omnidora this was actually a re-do with different fabric of a project I did in late May, and I've never had any problems with the cornstarch mixture in all these months (in a building where we do get the occasional cockroach roaming a kitchen cabinet at night). You really end up using SO little cornstarch, the ratio for the paste is 2 tablespoon starch to 2 cups of water, which is MORE than enough to cover a door like this. Anyway, I don't think it's something to be worried about.

@_uncanny: They're SUPER old (like probably 25 years) Sony headphones with new ear-cushions that were ordered online somewhere. Check Ebay! They're GREAT.

I *think* I recall seeing that bedspread from Urban Outfitters a while ago, but don't quote me on that.

Hi all, Dan here.

Just wanted to submit a quick comment assuring all you wood enthusiasts that this was NOT a nice piece of furniture. Yes, it's solid wood. But I wish a had a before-before picture! When I found it, it was dirty unfinished pine, had missing hardware, 2-3 layers of wallpaper-- complete with stickers!-- stuck to the top (which was also cracked down the middle), and the trim on the bottom was cracked and broken (it's just barely holding on in the pic!). It's not a nice walnut antique or anything of the sort-- I'm going to guess from the original hardware that it was built in the 50s-70s. No dovetail joints, nothing but wood glue, some nails, and some cobwebs. Also, she felt ugly. She told me.

I like a good vintage piece of wood furniture, but JEEEEZ, this isn't it. Thanks to everyone that likes my project, feel free to check out the blog, poke around a while, hang on my every word! I know I do, and it feels great.

Stunning stunning. I'm shocked that the kitchen was restored and not completely original, it fits perfectly and I love the skylights. And just the peek of that couch is making me drool.

I say don't paint the wood and DO reupholster! They'll look really nice if you pick a good fabric. Adding to Emily the Cat's comment, I'd also get rid of the back cushion but replace it with a thick (about as thick as the cushion is now) piece of foam cut to the same size as the back of the chair (a couple inches shorter than the current back cushion). Then staple your upholstery over the foam for a more mod look.

Recovering chairs of this size is a big job, but not too difficult as long as you're willing to put in the time. It also won't be cheap (probably run you about $250 for the materials, you need a LOT more fabric than you'd think- probably about 8 yards or so for this chair, upholstery grade which is heavier and therefore more durable), foam is quite expensive if you're replacing the cushion foam, and if you don't have an automatic stapler you'd be doing yourself a HUGE favor to get one. But anyone can do it! Just pull tight. Good luck!

I've sat on these in the store, and they both look and feel terrible in person. The seams are totally wiggidywhack, they're super uncomfortable... just overall terrible construction. You'd be better off with ikea, or spending a little more for something that will last 20 years instead of 2.

I have a small cool dorm, too! Also at NYU, but nothing like photo #3... they don't make those for freshman, that's for sure.

Personally, I wouldn't. And if I did, I'd probably go black, not white. BUT. Paint it if you love the lines of the piece and it will go well with the chairs you have planned for it. If not, this looks like a nice MCM table in good condition, and you could probably pick up some money for it on Craigslist and buy something you really want or might be more in line with your style. If painting will make you love it, go for it, but if it'll just make you dislike it less, I'd sell and buy something you want!

This is, indeed, a lovely post both in prose and sentiment. I've had the same experience with my grandparent's incredible home in Chicago and the slow removal of their artwork. It's surprising just how much the paintings lent the space an elevated architectural and emotional integrity that just changes completely once they're gone. But, alas, sometimes it's just time to pack up and move on and trust that new people will make happy memories in a space, and hang (or lean) new frames on its walls.

Best of luck with the move. I'll be moving out of a dorm room soon and even that feels like a crazy amount of stuff!
