I have the exact same problem from roasting chickens. I just accepted my oven would be dirty most of the time, and then, occasionally, when it gets to be more than I can handle, I break out the paste and the no-scratch scrubby back of a sponge. It takes a LOT of scrubbing, and it comes out looking sort of okay.

Grapefruit! Growing up, my dad would slice it like orange wedges and I HATED it. But when we were first dating my husband cut up a grapefruit for me so that I wasn't eating the white pith and it was wonderful. It turns out I love grapefruit.

Also, I went to the u-pick at my CSA last year and had peas straight off the plants. They were one of the sweetest, most delicious things I've ever eaten.

You are not the only one, Enamorada! So annoying. I've started sort of ignoring posts that include them.

We have two of those in our pantry! One holds tea towels, the other holds plastic wrap, tin foil, parchment paper, etc.

It'd be great to get one for cookie sheets like Rebecca's, although I'm not sure it would fit in our pantry closet.

As someone in DC who needs to get a chair reupholstered-- do you have good recommendations for places to go? I haven't decided yet between upholstering and slipcovering, I just know I'm probably not going to do it myself.

I cook a lot, and two burners and a half-size oven would be a total deal breaker for me. I would much prefer a smaller fridge. That said, even though I live in a city now, it's not New York. I would have second thoughts about living somewhere with a tiny, tiny kitchen anyway. Even though I put up with it when I was in New York, I would want counter space and a full size oven now.

Clearly there are differing opinions, even among people who cook. Do what makes sense for you, and make sure you're getting good appliances and the renovation is well done.

Our farmer's market in DC is still selling beets. I think they're like carrots or parsnips-- easy to store in a root cellar.

I agree that it's tacky to ask for money. I even think it's tacky to ask for money if someone asks what they can bring. I sometimes ask people to bring pre-dinner snack food, like olives or cheese, or to bring wine. Both of those can be pricey and are easy to bring. Don't ask a friend who's always late to bring pre-dinner snacks, though.

If it were me personally, I would do a stripe. Maybe like matress ticking? Or maybe bolder? But probably black and white, or grey and white.

Tea (and I see you're a tealuxe fan! I worked there for a summer after high school). Also teapots and tea sets. If I ever throw a brunch for exclusively tea drinkers, I will be all set. Otherwise, it's a little bit of overkill.

I also collect vinegars, which I didn't quite realize until I opened my cupboard last week and it was packed with them: balsamic, sherry, zinfandel, raspberry, white wine, rice wine, cider, and so forth.

Finally, my freezer is packed with chicken bones, carcasses, and stock. Homemade stock is just so useful.

I always went back and forth between Atwater and Jean Talon. Atwater was smaller, but a little fancier, but Jean Talon had EVERYTHING. Ah, I miss Montreal. And Premiere Moisson had my favorite baguettes.

I've done this and it's worked well. It takes a fair amount of self-control to keep from watering (and, in my case, not gently tugging on it to see if it's rooted yet).

This all feels beside the point. I'm willing to spend a little more to buy soaps and detergents that are less damaging to the environment, and organic or grass fed milk. But my farm share is cheaper than buying from the grocery AND it's organic AND it's local. And reupholstering furniture that I already own is cheaper than buying similar-quality furniture new. And cobbling shoes that I love and taking care of them is cheaper than buying new shoes. And there's no cost involved in vermicomposting. Being "green" should not be about buying new things.

Whenever I've asked a farmer at any of the farm stands I've frequented about a product, they've always been really helpful and informative. There have been a few times when I've asked to try the fruit or vegetable and they've always been really accomodating. I wouldn't ever ask, though, if I didn't intend to buy something from them.

People don't paint their ceilings because it's miserable work. I spent a good long time cutting in the trim along our ceiling and that was quite enough for me.
