Most overnight guests are visiting for an event --a football game, a holiday, a wedding, a new baby, a graduation, a concert. When you have friends and family from all over the world and they visit it is fun to mark the date and go back and remember later -- same as you do with a photo album, except I can never get my pics printed let alone into an album. We usually write something together with the date and a sketch or saying that will instantly help us recall the fun of time spent with good friends and family. What could be weird about that?

A few notes from the owner: The kitchen design is completely my own--and while the cabinets are Ikea (recommended by a very high end kitchen designer we know--who swears the hardware is exactly the same as in the Italian kitchens she installs and who routinely uses Ikea bases and hardware and then puts custom or Italian door fronts on them) we worked hard to mix much more expensive elements and appliances, and a 9-foot window's worth of Texas sunlight, to make it our own. The column unit in the middle was at first a problem--we had the walls removed to open the entire space up and there was a very small segment of load bearing wall (3 2x4's worth) that could not be eliminated--so we designed around it. A chef friend suggested putting the ovens there (which everyone loves--it moves one cook around the other side to utilize all that clean countertop), and what you maybe can't see around the corner from the tile is another cabinet that opens on the side of this unit at a 45% angle to the ovens. The back of that unit is dry-walled to match the dining room on the opposite side of the ovens--and works as an art space at the head of the dining room table. I spent many hours looking at Italian kitchen design online to decide where to put the blocks of red so that they would "pop" instead of overpower. We did the entire house in a very spare modern design with a nod towards the Danish Modern (not Swedish) roots of both of our childhoods. The green lights are from Lamps Plus online--caps collection green mini pendant chandelier. Maybe we will get to see what y'all think with a House Tour someday.

Radioriot--can you tell me what those chairs actually are? They were in my husband's family--not mine--and we no longer have them, although I do have all my parent's Danish Modern Teak furniture that you can kind of see in the background

Looking at these made us realize how we have gotten used to seeing perfectly shaped trees--these in the pictures are so lop-sided and out of shape, which gave them a charm all their own. I wish I still had those Barbie dolls with the bouffant hair--and that my husband had kept those mid century chairs . . . .

p.s. the opening line is addressing those of us who don't want to give the "typical host/hostess" gift--its not suggesting there is anything wrong with the old fallbacks or the accepted norms within your own circles.

I for one am sick of being handed a bottle of wine at the door when my guests arrive--am I supposed to open it now? I have paired my wines with what I am serving. Am I supposed to put it in my wine cellar? It may not be good enough to use up that space and will be tossed.
Seriously folks--ungrateful does not begin to describe the attitude you have put forth here. Of course we should all give a gift we know will be appreciated by our hostess. Putting more than five minutes thought into it was the idea behind this post I think--and I will try harder to actually think of how my hostess/host would like to be thanked instead of plunking down a bottle of booze because its easy and I might get to share it with them.

OK, we are not talking about leaving out our old skanky slippers for folks to wear! The point is to have a fresh pair of SOMETHING for guests who want something on their feet. In Japan anyway, everyone has tons of NEW slippers--not unlike the ones you get on a first class flight--for every guest who wants a pair. Same can be done here with socks, slipper socks, or even flip-flops (which we do in Texas). The point is that these are "inside" shoes. My husband has a pair of "inside" loafers--and since they never go outside, he can wear them inside all he wants.

Ditto to Black is the new Black.
Taste when it comes to decor/style = preference. Saying someone has no taste in these areas is indecorous at best, just plain mean at worst.

On Old Stuff--stuff that no one cares about and sends to the Salvation Army deserves a second chance at life--even if that requires a makeover! It beats the landfill.

Potluck you need to look at the source list. And based on the responses, it seems that most folks can tell the difference between TJ Maxx and the authentic antique trunks, original art, and items purchased by the homeowner on trips to Europe and Asia that are shown and described here.

Is that a zebra print rug in the living room? Great mix of accessories--not too kitchy, not too ethnic, and is that a mid-century chair in the dining room? Would love to see the rest in a house tour.
