I work from home/stay at home with my 14 month old son. I'm a photographer, and I put in an average of 16 hours every weekend on shoots, while my husband is home with our son. He's able to work from home one day per week, so it's usually Friday, and my "weekend" includes Friday shoots. During the week when I'm home with my son, we do all kinds of things to allow me the time I need to accomplish all the "not out shooting" work of maintaining a photography business - editing, scheduling, corresponding with clients, marketing, blogging and website updating, social media, client orders and deliveries, etc. That all comes to anywhere from 12-18 hours per week. I do them in the morning while husband plays with son before work, during his nap times, and after he goes to bed at night. I also can work a bit while he plays in his crib next to my desk. The rest of the daylight hours I play with him, feed him, do housework, and answer emails from my smartphone when I can. I get it done. I could not pay all my families bills on what I earn but I more than break even and contribute financially to the family. it's hard and it's frustrating, but it is also really rewarding and makes me push my boundaries, get scrappy, work smart. No need to criticize the article if your situation doesn't work the way hers does. Some jobs don't lend themselves to flexibility - others do. Finding one that does may be the key to working from home while caring for your children.

I love your soft gray walls, by the way. My bedroom is gray and I love it!

Until you find the piece of art you love with all your heart, get a tall rectangular white canvas and paint white, with one wide stripe of color across it, about a third of the way up, in a shade matching or complimenting your accent colors. Hang that over the chair. It will balance the window on the other side of that wall and is an inexpensive fill until you find the piece that makes your heart sing.

I agree with those who suggested a buffet in the back - something tall and narrow with a big mirror hung over it and colorful or bright white objects on top. Perhaps glass doors on the buffet would allow you to have brightly colored or white dishes showing.

I'd also look for two small white globes (Chinese lanterns?) to suspend in the dark corners, flanking the buffet. Paint the cords the color of the wall to hide them.

Finally, one LARGE piece of art that you LOVE on the wall facing the kitchen - you'll be able to see it then from kitchen and dining room.

I love these videos. I've missed a few days here and there but have had a chance to catch up. I have bathroom floors with grout that just won't stay white. Suggestions PLEASE!!

Day 16: Clean One Room
The 20/20 Home Cure

OMG - I know that market! :-) I'm becoming enough of a New York visitor to recognize things. Apparently Maxwell lives in the areas I frequent in my visits. I love the flower days the best - something about having fresh flowers in the house inspires me to keep the rest of the house tidy around them so they can show off. Buying them (not quite weekly, because mine seem to last up to 10 days) is a treat too. I think I might put a new vase on my Christmas list this year.

Delightful! Was that Union Square Farmer's Market? Ahh, how I love weekends in NYC. I'm feeling like a trip there again sooon! Can I borrow your scooter? ;-)

I cook at home almost every night so for today's assignment I decided to try a new recipe. I made Moqueca - a Brazilian fish stew in a rich coconut milk broth. It was delicious! I'll post recipe and pics on my blog this weekend. I also had time while cooking to make my coveted Veggie Scrap Stock - recipe here (near the bottom of the page): http://oneperweek.wordpress.com/recipes/amazing-soups/

Thanks for another fun day of curing, Maxwell!

I bought flowers too, for the first time in quite a while. I got tiny yellow daisies and deep red alstromeria with yellow veins. And now to finish Monday's task by mopping the kitchen while dinner (spaghetti) simmers.

I also love the videos as they are. :-) I also love seeing your home, Maxwell. Makes me feel more content with my small city apartment (several of my friends have recently bought houses and I'm envious).

Day 2: Buy Fresh Flowers

Refreshing. I can't wait to add a trip to the Whole Foods for flowers to the end of my day. :-) My room-cleaning was a bit more than a 20-minute project but I've got time this evening to finish it and be caught up. Feels good to be giving the apartment attention it needs, but in short bursts that accommodate my work and school schedule.

I'm excited about the new format too. I was longing to do the Cure this fall (had wonderful success last fall including compete redecoration of my bedroom, and every single day I love my dove grey walls!). But between a new job and taking college classes for the first time (at 33!) I didn't see how I could possibly fit it in. This 20 minutes a day plan sounds ideal, and lets me play along!

Ms. Mack, I really like your substitution of candles for flowers. I will still do flowers at least once but lighting candles and actually sitting to enjoy them sounds divine. :-)

Looking forward to working with you all for the next 20 (or so) days.

I set up my landing strip during the Fall 09 Cure, and love it still - it works so well. So this year, we're contemplating a narrow table in the entryway, or a small mail box for the incoming stuff, so it won't pile on our desks anymore. The other Landing Strip task this week will be to assess our front hall closet - some things can be moved to the outbox and others better organized, winter coats can be stored till Fall, and the closet can possibly hold some items from the kitchen area that need a more permanent home.

Also enjoyed my clean house this weekend and several meals cooked at home.

I got a late start to the Cure this time, so we're spending our weekend cleaning/clearing a path, but some cleaning will still need to be done going into week three.

Big tasks: cleaning kitchen, mopping the floors (laminate floors equal constant dust and dust bunnies), cleaning living room and editing the DVD and CD collection.

Visionary tasks: ponder furniture placement in living room for improved flow, discuss new accent colors for living room (we primarily have neutral and dark tones, with red accents, but I want a change and we're leaning toward steely blues and a bit of gold or chocolate).

Love this post! We have a very small kitchen too, and love finding new ways to maximize space. Here's a picture of our favorite solution: hanging our pots and pans on the only bit of wall space in the room (IKEA racks and hooks) http://www.flickr.com/photos/43707206@N05/4057176834/in/set-72157622692025790/

How to Add Storage in a Small Kitchen | Apartment Therapy Chicago

I live in a DC neighborhood with everything I need close by - plus I tend to keep the foods we need stocked, so we've been fine on supplies. We've slogged through the snow to get to the gym almost every day. I enjoyed the weekend days to clean house and help my husband cook Cajun food for our Superbowl Party (Geaux Saints!), and now, after two days without work (I work for a school) my house is clean, I've made one of those soups that take all day to make, AND I got to watch several episodes of HouseHunters (my guilty pleasure) on Hulu today. Tomorrow? Sleep late again, another trip to the gym, maybe some laundry and curling up with hubby for movies. I'm in the mood for The Godfather.

Arkay - I'm dying laughing. My husband will often pee in the bathtub at night, because he can do that without turning on the light to monitor his aim. Jesus. I just said that in public.

Folding clothes gets me - because I wait till ALL my clothes are dirty before I wash them. I fold the first two or three loads and put them away, then I'm burned out and the last load or two will sit in the basket for two weeks. I hate it. I hate that I don't just do it. And we all know, a pile of clothes attracts more clothes to it. Sweaters now top the current pile, which is unattractively horaded in a wire grocery cart in my bedroom. Oh, god, I've got to home and clean. !!!

Great idea - we occasionally get unpleasant odors in the bathroom due, I think, to some problems with the seal around the base of the toilet. I think keeping something like this in the bathroom would also help keep the whole bathroom fresher.
