I agree with so many you of you in this thread (drum pendants, vessel sinks, House Hunters, etc.)! I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I think that extremely dark (brown through black), or reddish stained cabinets look extremely dated to me. I often see them paired with cheap granite, and I think it dates kitchens and bathrooms to the late 90s, meaning they're at the dying end of the 20 year design lifecycle.

Hey MichelleEllyn, if your husband is in Nile, I'm gonna give you a virtual high five right through my computer screen. Oh, and ditto on the whole "how much time I spend reading decorating blogs" thing.

I wear a lot of black and listen to a lot of heavy music, and I think at first glance people expect my place to look a lot more like me, or imagine that I live in some kind of rock'n'roll heavy metal theme park, which I don't. While they may be initially surprised, once they look past the pale walls and the midmod furniture and see the skulls, gig posters and strange collections, it starts to make sense.

Can't believe I missed this question the first time around!

My favorite solution? I stick them onto magnet sheets and then cut them out carefully. Now I can stick and restick my favorite stickers on my fridge, magnetic board, filing cabinets, etc.

Here's a photo of some of my favorite stickers converted into magnets: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3201/2923630218_6c33b318be.jpg

You'll notice that, as with real stickers, you can not only stick them, but overlap them without the commitment.

Surprised to not see any comments saying "if you give them something that looks like the real thing to destroy, they will destroy the real thing if they happen to get their hands on it." The only great idea on this page is the DIY cardboard phone, which would be made even better if you get the kid to help make it. The crafting and construction (no matter how rudimentary) might actually teach your child something other than mindless consumerism.

Seconded, danabarrett. I understand the convenience of having hot leftovers and popcorn in a (pardon the pun) jiffy, but using a stove or oven doesn't take much more time. I've never had a microwave, nor did my parents or grandparents. It has never been necessary. Why have two appliances to do the job of one?

I agree with Cally. I painted a black chalkboard wall that met on outside corners with two white walls, and no matter how hard I tried, the edge where the two colors met bled over slightly. After trying to touch up the black, and having it bleed onto the white, and then touching up the white and having it bleed onto the black, I grabbed a small watercolor brush and meticulously touched it up that way. It will actually take less time than trying to figure out another solution, guaranteed.

I second Raina's suggestion. I have the same type of heaters throughout my house, and I painted mine to match the wall and they pretty much disappear. If you used acrylic on the wall, you can use the same paint, and you can unhook the front panel of the heater for easier access.

I painted all the surfaces that show as white in your photo with wall color (in my case, pale grey), and everything that's in shadow I left its original color (tan), and you can't see where the paint stops from normal human height.

You can stick regular furniture in front of them, but the larger the piece, the less effective the heating from that unit will be. I would be careful of putting any curtains or fabrics in front of them, but that's about it.

I felt the same way about my heaters when I first moved in, but you really do just get used to them once they're not overtly visible.

Hands down the most inspiring place yet... and from a fellow Canuck no less! I have a lot of similar pieces, and these photos are inspiring me to pare back on some of the decorative elements in order to let them shine. Also, I've been torn between slate and checkerboard kitchen floors for a while now, and your space is making an extremely convincing argument. I'll be revisiting these photos for a long time...

I have this setup now, and while it's one of my favorite aspects of my new home, it's probably more pretty than practical. Previously, my desk faced a wall, which made it much easier to concentrate. Now when I'm trying to focus, I get distracted by the dogs and kids cavorting in the park across the street, and during the mid-afternoon I've gotten headaches from the glare of the sun bouncing off the cars parked along the road. That said, I still love it, and am willing to deal with the distractions accordingly.

Ever since I've had a double bed, I've used two single comforters. My boyfriend and I still have problems with motion transfer due to our crappy mattress, but at least we avoid the midnight bedclothes tug-of-war that we still experience when travelling. That said, I can't envision sleeping in separate beds, although I love seeing photos of single beds styled this way.

During the moving/reno process I nicknamed our place "Lebanon", since it remained beautiful while still being so wartorn. It's official name is Number 9. Not fancy, but alliterative and easy for friends to remember.

When I hear Glen Benton Gothenburg, SE, I can't help but wonder if this is Deicide's Glen Benton... In any case, the place is fantastic.

Maybe a native New Yorker can corroborate, but I'm under the impression that the framed b&w photos in the 4th photo are of details on a building located at the corner of Great Jones & Lafayette. I seem to recall having taken a similar, if not same set of photos upon walking out of Acme Bar & Grill last fall...

I'd be willing to pay top dollar for a Magnesit lamp base in good condition, silver preferably. Here's a photo I found of the base with a Tertial lamp in it.

http://www.designsyrup.com/designsyrup/gallery/furnitures/IKEA_tertial_lamp.jpg

I have a couple of those lamps, but only one base, and while Ikea still has the lamps, they don't sell the base anymore. I'm guessing that their weight factored into that decision (easily 5 pounds of solid iron). Down the line, I plan on having the base I have cast and copied, but that'll have to wait for now.

That's my big ol' bathroom - thanks for the great ideas and nice comments everyone! I especially like the idea of doing a floor to ceiling curtain, and I'm going to investigate all the paint ideas you guys have recommended. The towel bar is gonna go, and I have to take a closer look at getting rid of the toilet paper holder (it's in the same beige, only ceramic and built into the wall...). I really appreciate all the help - thanks again!

I have what may or may not be an authentic Arne Jacobsen Grand Prix chair that I don't let anyone sit in, due to the stress marks that have developed where the seat bends up into the back. I have horrible visions of someone sitting down into it too abruptly and snapping the back off, so I keep people from using it. Stupid I know, since what is a chair that doesn't fulfill its functions as a chair, but I love its look and legacy too much to risk its careless destruction.
