My mother used this very stuff to make a marinade to slather on the ham while it was cooking last Christmas, with great success. Rather than honey-roasted ham, it was ginger-roasted ham! Yum.

BEER! Beer and cheese...oh it's the most perfect pairing ever. I mean, we all know that bread and cheese are made for each other. And beer is like, erm, extra fermented, liquid bread! Heh, clearly, cheese and beer are meant to be together.

You know, I was the pickiest eater in my entire class all through school (yes, even high school). I was legendary with the other parents. My poor mother tried everything, is a wonderful cook, always involved me, and is excited about new foods to this day (except caramel, which she won't touch, the weirdo). I was having none of it. I stayed that way until college, where I got bored with the cafeteria food and started branching out on my own. Many years later I am in love with food, cook all the time, teach cheese and beer pairing classes, and cannot resist buying produce I've never seen before. So for all you foodie parents who dismay at your child's insistence on living entirely on white pasta and butter (uh, not that I ever did such a thing), I am living proof that you never know.

I've been drinking a lot of Speakeasy's White Lightning now that the weather's warmed up. With lemon. always with lemon.

I have 4 jars of various pickled things in my fridge right now; snap peas, carrots and radishes. There might also be turnips back there somewhere. I have a bad habit of pickling everything. Mmmmm pickles....

I know this isn't what you are looking for exactly but...I bet one of your carnivorous friends would appreciate a gift of bacon grease (I know I would!)

I live in San Francisco, and our tap water is pretty darn tasty, so that's what I drink. I am also lazy, which may have something to do with it.

As a little girl my father taught me a trick for picking crispy apples. I've never met anyone else who does this, but it's always seemed to work for me! You knock on or flick the apple with the back of your finger or knuckle. I use a 'flicking' motion (as if I were trying to annoy an older sibling by flicking them on the forehead). The higher pitched the sound, the crispier the apple will be. Lower pitched apples are softer and mealier inside.

Oh I love these little guys! I did a homestay in the suburbs of Osaka when I was 13 and my host family had a takoyaki grill pan. They laid out all the ingredients and we had a takoyaki-making party. It was so much fun. Though I may have secretly kept a few balls tako-free because at 13 I couldn't quite get over the chewiness of octopus...but in my defense I was, well, 13.

Cooked fish. I loves me some raw fish, but as soon as it is even slightly warmed it starts to smell like...well...rotting fish. Seriously, same smell. I think there are wires crossed in my brain somewhere because try as I might, I CANNOT get over that association. Blech.

Oh good grief people. This is terribly immature and passive aggressive. If I caught someone using those on me instead of ASKING me not to recline, I'd take them from them and proceed to recline as far back as possible.

Just as a sort of friendly FYI to those long suffering tall passengers, I know those coach seats SUCK for you. But I am quite short and while I don't need the extra leg room, my short stature makes the curve of the seat back excruciating to my back. If I don't recline (and I don't if the person behind me is tall), the seat back forces me into a hunched position and I have back problems for days.

Those seats suck for everyone. It's not being "hippie" to suggest that people grow the **** up and communicate with the people around them like adults.

I love it. I imagine it would look pretty bad for the first couple months, but as it is now, I like how it looks. I do agree with Joan A., though, that cleaning would be problematic.

Ok, guys, telling people to just go spend more on spices isn't the best advice. I know, I know, high end spices ARE better, but some of us cannot afford that! To those people who actually suggested things like finding an authentic recipe or toasting your dried spices beforehand, thank you.

My advice is like many others; taste and reseason...ALOT. I made the saddest pot of roasted veggie and lentil stew the other night, or so I thought, and all I had to do to fix it was throw in an extra pinch of salt and some vinegar. The flavors of all the (inexpensive, I am BROKE people) spices I'd put in but couldn't taste suddenly came bursting forth.

Amusingly, as I read this post, there is a Yes on Prop 8 add directly above it. I'm just going to pretend I didn't see it, grrr.
