I agree with most things the other posts, however, I do take issue with Malmo Flowers post about being on the phone. I have worked in retail for 25 years, and would like to say there is a huge difference with a customer that is paying, and a salesperson that is being paid. I would prefer that a customer get off the phone when being rung up, but the reality is that they are paying my paycheck, we are not equals, the customer is my boss. a quick idea would be to put a pale color behind your shelves. Before you commit, try covering foam core with some fabric and pop it back there. It will lighten up the shelves and add interest. I think the idea of "camping cabin" is a great one. The reality is, most of us don't use our rooms in the day time so play up the idea of evenings by the fire. I ran into the same issue with deep window recesses. I originally painted them the wall color, but realized that they don't read the same color because the shadows. I painted them white and they not only looked great, but reflected more light into the room. Since you are dealing with northern light, white will give you more light. Okay, I really don't want to admit this, but once when I was in college I did this to an enameled cast iron pan. I sprayed it with oven cleaner and it was good as new. I can't imagine using something that toxic now...however, it saved a the pan. Boiled Dry: Can This Pot Be Saved? |

I totally agree on heated floors, worth it at any price. As far as the trash can with lids, Vipp makes them that will last a lifetime, but certainly a splurge Where to Save and Where to Splurge: Bathroom Style on A Budget |

There are so many good suggestions here, and even as a documentary junkie, I need to open netflix right now (okay, it is actually open but I am watching Mobwives) Sorry if I overlooked the suggestion already, but Paris is Burning is available to stream right now. Even if you have seen it before, it is so worth watching again. Powerful and heartbreaking and beautiful. Five Great Documentaries to Stream on Netflix Tonight |

Wen I was in college, I had drapes made of brushed twill that gave a similar feel to velvet, but was easier to maintain. You might look for that as well, since orange is a color in fashion right now (thank you, Mood.) I totally understand wanting to take your time to find the right thing, I search forever for everything, but then I never change, so waiting for what I love is worth it. as far as refinishing the wood, don't bother. Get a can of Briwax in light brown and rub it on and buff it off. It will hide all the scratches and make the wood look brand new in a few minutes. if you are obsessed with this concept, at least put in radiant floor heating, it will help the floor dry so that it isn't always damp. I do, however, for the record, agree with many other posts here, go with a great half bath What's the Flaw with This Master Bathroom Idea? Good Questions |

If you are holding on to it for sentimental reasons only, let it go. If you love it, keep it until you can redo it. You will never find one as well made today. Have you considered taking a class and uphostering it yourself? I took a class 15 or so years ago, and it is really pretty easy. I actually got up at 5:30 to place an order online, then took a shower and was at Target by 7:15. I stood in line, went in at 8 and went straight to housewares. Got everything I wanted and watched as people literally bought every single piece of home from the shelves. The employees gave up trying to put in on shelves and left it on the carts it came out on. Sad that people that wanted a piece for themselves couldn't get it because of ebayers. I bought several things, but I can promise you, after waiting on this launch since Spring (and taking a vacation day to shop for it) none of mine will end up on ebay Missoni For Target: The Sad & Sold Out In-Store Look |

The first time I ever saw Breakfast at Tiffanys, this was the thing that stood out. I wanted one so bad. Now my taste is a little more formal, but if I could find the right spot...and a broken clawfoot tub, I am sure that I could make it work. Remember, later in the movie, Holly used it as a plant stand, so it could be multi purpose. It also occurs to me that with the right upolstery it could go outside A Claw Foot Bathtub…Couch |
