For wood (like oak) with black mildew or mold stains in the grain, pick up hair coloring peroxide at the beauty supply store. I had a hunch that peroxide would work on wood, and then I discovered that it's used to bleach paper products. 3% isn't strong enough, and there are a couple of strengths available, including one that is gel like.

My mother heard that catsup or tomato paste cleaned brass, and I was assigned that task. It worked.

Haven't tried it, but I've read that buttermilk gently cleans old linen.

I second the cheap hairspray trick.

de-humidifier, most definitely. my southeastern home is very humid, and when the AC is not on, i turn on my de-HMDFR, and close my bedroom door.

i've also used it to speed up paint drying, and it dries and warms my bedroom on cool, damp nights.

i spent enough on damp-rid to buy a de-humidifier, but still put one in my car during the rainy season (just make certain it's placed in a plastic box, on the car floor, to prevent tips and spills).

choose a rug from this website, and work the color scheme from there. there are a number of choices that could tie together the two wall colors.

and this was another online store i found when i searched for metal pegboard.

a metal pegboard panel, custom-sized and painted at an automotive paint shop for an even, durable finish.

you would have to figure out how to mount it, attach it to the jutting wall, or suspend it from the ceiling, but it could also be a very useful storage spot with pegboard hooks.

http://www.carguygarage.com/two16by32inm.html

it would hide that corner, make it appear to be a planned wall, and it would be fire-safe and ventilated.

don't do anything permanent, but replace the knobs with these: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=19201&catalog=room&category=rm_accessories&subcategory=acc_knob_pull

and save the original knobs.

have a piece of dark marble or granite cut (that will hang over by a couple of inches) for the top. use restor-a-finish, in maple-pine (doesn't add much color) to refresh the wood.

and, as suggested above, modern artwork, or a great modern poster or mirror above the sideboard.

meant to be specific: picket fence white is a great white...ralph lauren paint.

a correction, semi-gloss only one the woodwork, not on the upper walls. that should be a washable flat, maybe an eggshell finish.

I am not one for dark, rich colors in the kitchen, but I would suggest painting from floor to chair railing (behind the stove) an unusual blue/green-grey/teal...and repeat that color on the "backsplash", from counter-top to cabinets. Paint all the doors and trim a semi-gloss white, as well as the area above the chair railing. The deep color will ground and define the area.

2 colors below, perhaps what jamiealyse was thinking:

http://www.coxpaint.com/store/cart.php?target=product&product_id=18749&category_id=255

these are links to ikea legs and bases, including red trestle supports (cheap, and another bit of red) which could be fitted with a butcher block top, and placed next to the stove for food prep and as a safe surface for hot pans.

yes, as already stated, clear the fridge doors but if you really need magnets, make some with great graphics (use art postcards or kids' flashcards).

I would love to see a poster like this: http://www.polishposter.com/html/poster0605.html
above the stove. It'll be fine, I've had art in my kitchen for 30 years.

and for your floors (this is listed as kitchen compatible), if you have the budget: http://www.flor.com/service/flor/shop/item/Feelin-Groovy/1391302500-100573.html

i love heather's whimsical fabric, patterns and colorways:
http://www.skinnylaminx.info/products/ceramics/

one possible solution to the large backsplash behind the stove...have a piece of plexi cut the same size as the huge backsplash, request sanded/rounded edges, and drill holes along the top and bottom, for screws. drill holes into the formica to match those in the plexi. place kid's colorful paintings, wallpaper or kids' picture book images between the formica and the plexi. screw into place.

as a framer, i used this as an inexpensive (and secure) way to display posters/menus in restaurants.

oh, and switch out the light switches.

knobs from here:
http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/subcategory/list.do?catalog=room&category=rm_accessories&subcategory=acc_knob_pull

this rug under the table:
http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=170&f=5145

a pendant light similar to this: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=120&f=4694

the blue-turq chairs for the table, or paint thrift store chairs this color: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=810&f=5005

a simple white, wooden venetian blind over the sink (the shade store, and i was very happy)

some great posters or artwork on the hanging cabinets space, and to the left of the doorway and near the table: http://www.polishposter.com/

i would remove the metal division, and place a thrifted and painted, low buffet...just make certain the back is finished so it will also look good from the living room.

a pale gray on the walls, and bring in a pale shimmery green and turq blue in the form of painted buffet, chairs, table.
