listen, forget the controversy and take heart in a hip city family raising a gaggle of (seemingly) normal kids in a funky and unconventional, if not chaotic, urban environment.

gives us kid-loving city-dwellers hope that me you baby does not = resigning to life in the 'burbs! (not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.)

cheers to the novogratz's. and make no bones about it: if i had the money, i'd be living that life. kids, chaos, and all.

the coffee table was actually my grandmothers, then made its way to my mom, then to me. they purchased it from a craftsman at a flea market in new york sometime in the late-60s, early-70s.

stink: good question--i don't recall! but i know got it online, and it was originally black. (spray-painted it white.) if you google "elevated dog feeder" you can find similar styles.

okay--more questions answered:

mirror: i wanted to keep the windows blind-free, so that was my out-of-the-box, multi-purpose solution to both lend some privacy in the front of the house and incorporate a big mirror into the space.

white/wooden chair: picked that one up for $6 at a flea market. unfortunately, it doesn't have any manufacturer labels, so i'm not sure where/when it's from. was definitely reupholstered at some point over the years though.

layout: somehow managed to leave the bathroom off the floor plan (oops!), but it's adjacent to the living room, which is the first photo in the series. front door is the one between the bookcase and the desk in that same photo. and in retrospect, i would have included bedroom photos as well--it was hard to narrow down to 5!

dog: jersey, too, is disappointed she is not on AT. and shanalulu, you are absolutely correct in that almost everything below waist-level bears some kind of chew mark. so don't look too closely. =)

ha--pretty sure, given the proclivities of the flaming lips, there's no need for a comma between "drug-damaged" and "artist"!

love this home. (and thanks, AT, for getting back to your roots and showing a do-it-yourself small space/rental. some of the tours lately have been a bit...eh, slick and designer-y?) cheers to carrie's clean, bright, lived-in space!

i use an indoor electric collar on my great dane to keep her out of range of the more "precious" items in my condo. she learned quickly to avoid the areas the three sensors cover, and if she forgets and does come into range, she gets a few beeps which quickly alert her to back away before she gets zapped.

you can buy them online from most pet supply stores. it has been an absolute savior for me (and my furniture...and my groceries...and my shoes...), so if it's something you're comfortable with, i'd highly recommend it!

i have a few-months-old jasper, and when it first showed up, to describe it as "very firm" would have been an understatement.

it's loosened up a bit over the 4 months i've had it, but the back cushions especially have been slow to soften up despite lots and lots of cushion rotation.

my guess is that it's going to take jasper and i lots of quality time before he's showroom soft--which sounds like just the kind of wear you're looking for. enjoy!

if your sofa is pushed up against the wall, and the back of the sofa is upholstered in the same fabric, might you be able to snip a bit of the back fabric and have a professional use that to patch the hole in the seat? then he/she could use a remnant to patch the back of the sofa, and you can save the big (i.e. expensive) full reupholstering for down the road.

i too have oak trim throughout my vintage condo, which i only DIDN'T paint white because i got yelled at by someone (okay, everyone) any time i mentioned the idea.

then...i painted the whole place benjamin moore's madison grey. and now i LOVE the oak trim. the coolness of the paint color offsets the warm wood tones beautifully.

and if this dark blue-grey isn't your cup of tea, i'd say any cool tone with a greyish tint would work spectacularly.

even as a compulsive hang-and-rehang-'til-it's-perfect-er(?), i say leave it as is. i'd just install a shelf beneath the arrangement and put a cute doo-dad or two on it. (just make sure the shelf depth is short so you're not knocking your head on it when sitting on the sofa!)

i was too cheap to splurge for tiles during my kitchen reno and ended up using textured wallpaper for my backsplash instead. (i think it was $12/roll from lowes--which felt like a real steal at the time!)

i painted the wallpaper dark brown with a heavy-duty kitchen/bath paint, and i couldn't love it more! kind of has the same feel as vintage tin ceiling tiles, and it's held up fantastically over the course of the past few years.

i hate to spill my little secret, but the st. peter's barn sale at the kane county fair grounds (annually in september) is a scavenger's dream. my friend furnished her one bedroom apartment with flea market gems from the sale for under $100.

bonus? it's a fund-raiser, and it sells like it. everything is priced to go--literally. also, most shoppers are suburbanites with big-box taste, so all the cool retro stuff sticks around way longer than you'd expect. mark your calendars--this year, for september 19/20--and i'll see you in line for the furniture barn!
