what a great neighborhood!
i'd go with your gut and do the built in bookshelves. paint it out the same color as the fireplace/wall/attic space and fill it with books and all of the wonderful colorful things you have! and i'd leave the attic space as it is - adds so much interest. i don't mind the tv in that space either. the other option is to try the other side of the fireplace so you don't get the glare from the window, but i'd remove the chair on that side.

i love the looks of furniture at DWR, but even though we make a comfortable living, i just can't bring myself to pay those prices. i even visited an outlet in Palm Springs, and it's still not 'within reach.' so i shop at *gasp* Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Room and Board ... and yes, like another commenter, I even shop at the big box stores. I'm at a point in life, though, where I don't want any Ikea furniture. I'd like to purchase something that will last a while longer. And to avoid getting 'bored with it' as once commenter feared, I just look for a classic feel to it - be it modern or even traditional. yup. it can all go together if it's what you love.

i miss chicago - a lot.
and i've been following this a bit.
vignettes: houses, homes & apartments are made of of them.
granny chic: headlines use catch phrases to draw people in. it worked, eh?
taxidermy, pets, and plants: lots of people have pets and plants - living and not - they forget to clean the tank and water the plants - so what?
so-called clutter: have you heard of salon style? mostly for wall display but it flows onto surfaces, too.
not everyone lives the same way - you don't have to like it just because it's on AT.

Vanessa is the only other person I know that has a Ukrainian mace. Mine sits on my dresser.
