I live in a typical Boston brownstone on a gorgeous tree lined street and I am pretty sure what it says to people about me is: "She is a heartless yuppie (she must be called Madison and her boyfriend is Chad); she eats heirloom tomatoes; and she really wants every neighborhood playground converted to a parking lot or a glorified dog park."

Well, it's lying!

What it should be sayng instead is: "She grew up in one of those fugly 70's buildings with gazillion identical apartments, and she is psyched to finally be in a house with nooks and cranies and no two windows alike."

given the great white paneling you have on the wall (which appears to stop after the window somewhat akwardly) I would paint the wall the same white color. White on white is very in right now and is incredibly calming too. You can then bring in any accent colors you like from the minty green of the throw to black, and it will all look in place. i personally would stay away from the temptation of bringing too many fall colors into that room (oranges & browns)......

get one of those curtain rods that is practically at the ceiling and spans the entire wall with the window. get curtains in light blue matching your duvet cover with about a foor of brown at the bottom ala restoration harware (see the link below). hang them so that the curtains create the illusion of that whole wall being a giant window.

Where did you get those fabulous statues of the people doing yoga? I love love love them!

Personally, I am also tired of the sunburst mirrors and the bentwood anything, but I do agree that that article is obnoxious. And the Domino mag editor should get off her high horse and realize that her maganizine is hugely responsible for trivializing so many of these trends. If they weren't putting them in issue after issue (and instead came up with original material for a change), we wouldnt be all so sick of them.

maybe paint the the walls a pale yellow too -- it would make your white appliances and cabinets look very crisp.

I also vote for the IKEA bed in the picture. My boyfriend bought it recently and it's the sturdiest piece of furniture I have ever seen (and believe me, I've seen a lot cause I am really into furniture)

what style/colors are you going for here? i'd keep stools as an option given the small scale of the table.
