@rachelfiske - I've seen that cat house here http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth/Apartment/The+Purr+fect+Place+in+Cabin

They also have a cat Teepee, lol.

Oooh this is a major dilemma with my 2 cats and I. About a month ago one cat tipped a glass of water (yes too close) onto my laptop whilst stretching out on to the keyboard, thus killing the computer. I managed to save the info on the HD, but had to buy a new computer. I went with a desktop this time with a nice big screen and small wireless keyboard & pad. What happens? Both cats (VERY LARGE) manage to walk right in front of me and lay down on the keyboard & pad. They STILL get in the way!

Sometimes I give up and let them rest on my arms while I try to type underneath their crushing weight. Sigh.....

From my experience, smokers for neighbors is inevitable no matter where you live. Sure, they may come and go, but you have to suffer in the meantime.

And on a side note, there is no such thing as a dream apartment in my opinion. There is always something that will make it not so dreamy. When & if you can *own* a place, be able to shape it and make it feel like you've always been there and heck, even choose your neighbors, etc., that is the dream place to live. Apartments should only ever be a temporary solution!

I did pretty much all the things you can think of to get rid of roaches. My cats became immune to them - I'd physically pick kitty up, show her the roach, she'd pretend she didn't see anything. I finally was able to afford an exterminator and we sealed up every inch of the apartment except for underneath the radiators. So far, so good...and 3 months counting....

You have some great taste - everyone is asking where you got certain elements in the pic - my Q is where is the cat from? So cute!

@kipi - boric acid can be a problem for humans and pets depending on exposure - according to the exterminator I had come in to get rid of my roach problem

Just use it sparingly and control where it is sprinkled.

I've had issues with the neighbors in the *next* building across the alley. Their drunken parties would go to 5am and I could hear every word in the conversation...two rooms & an alley away.

I've researched what you can and can't do about this and found that the police want you to 1) contact the noise maker and ask in a calm manner to be quiet and if that doesn't work, then 2) contact the building manager before "bothering" the police. If the building manager fails to take care of the problem and it persists, you may call the police.

However, they will judge how loud the music is by how well they can hear it from their squad on the street or front door of the building or even the noise maker's door. Only then do they make the decision on whether to issue a noise citation. It's never a guarantee.

Best solution? Blast opera or classical in short bursts at 6am in their direction (KIDDING). Seriously, though, all of the above posters have good advice.

I cannot figure out for the life of me what is going on above/behind the bed. Is that the wall? A screen? I can see the lamp shadow on some type of surface but what is it???

Excellent tip - but let's add to that shall we?

When I rented my latest place, I didn't realize that the bathroom door DIDN'T CLOSE SHUT. I discovered this after signing the lease and low and behold, the door and jam had been painted over so many times (and I think even the wood expanded) that the door doesn't close properly.

Pretty embarrassing when company is over!

I remember seeing this house in an issue of Martha.

There's an interesting thing about color - how do you know that the red I see and the red you see are the same shade of red? Color is sooo subjective!

Gah! Target is my weakness...first Jean Paul Gaultier for Target and now this?! This does not bode well for my very small wallet.

Love it nonetheless.

I have the same issue. What's worse is that I am a non-practicing chocolatier - because of this.

Things I have done:

Bread: freeze it and when you want a slice or two, toast it (not the greatest solution)

Veggies and fruit: keep it in the fridge

Chocolate and wine: I bought a wine fridge at Target for around $100 to store these items - it's wonderful

Otherwise, I just don't buy certain foods anymore (bread in particluar) unless I know I'm going to eat them right away.

Hope this helps!

@SherryBinNH - for me, the pouf is a perfect cat bed - something fashionable around the apartment that isn't a traditional cat bed :)

I don't know if I'd have the patience for this project, though. :S

Love love love the sparing use of orange. And the only white painting above the couch - I would never go for it except for this very spot. Beautiful interiors (though that one bedroom looked a bit unfinished). Details and the fact that this is a cape cod, no less, make this a happy, inviting home.

Wonderful post, fellow Milwaukean! (And of course, like the others, I love the opening portrait.)

If you rent from a large rental company with many properties, are you going to have a tougher time negotiating a lease? It seems as though they are pretty inflexible when it comes to such things.

10 Questions To Ask Before You Sign A Lease | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles

Is there anything similar out there to bedbugger.com that reports on cockroaches?

I moved into a place that I wasn't all too thrilled with in the beginning. They smoke bombed it before I moved in because of little fruit flies. About a year later, I started seeing cockroaches. Then one by one I find out my neighbors moved because of cockroaches. Management knows about it and says just to use a spray! I have two cats and only two of my six windows open (painted shut with radiator heat to keep 'em sealed). Not an option. So I really want to move, but I'm afraid that the next place I move to will have the same issue. It's not like you can really ask the new landlord while signing a lease whether they have cockroaches or not.

As for keeping my own stuff cockroach free, I plan to smoke bomb all my furniture if I can get into the new place with about a week or two between moving to transition my cats, etc. Not sure if it will work, but I'll try anything.

Oh, we rented a Uhaul...I think that is pretty much the way to go. It's the cost of gas in all the different states that you really need to think about.
