Aimi, the "1 red bean, pecan half, or small plastic baby figurine" comes from the tradition of the fève in a Galette des Rois (http://chocolateandzucchini.com/archives/2005/01/galette_des_rois.php)- if you get it in your piece, you are crowned king or queen for the day. Traditionally with the Mardi Gras King cake, the person who gets it buys next year's cake. You can also read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_cake.

Agreed- I'm sticking with cast iron. I am not interested in replacing other non-stick options when the finish gives out or gets scratched, and I'm happy to put some elbow grease into keeping my cast iron pans nice.

I would love to get rid of our cable, but then Mr. sfumato wouldn't be able to watch the Red Sox, and that would kill him.

Sigh.

I was a vegetarian for a long time, but that changed when I went to college overseas where being a healthy vegetarian just wasn't possible.

Mr. sfumato loves meat too much to give it up, so we get it via CSA from a local farm, and we try to consume meat no more than a few times a week (I will not eat veal or lamb, though).

We have friends who are vegetarians, and since I love to cook, I absolutely make vegetarian dishes when they come over. There are so many great options that it honestly doesn't feel like extra work.

This might be due to the fact that we mostly gravitate towards Mediterranean, North African and Middle-Eastern cuisine which includes lots of vegetarian dishes.

Yes, absolutely. We have a Sentry fireproof and waterproof model (it's about 40 lbs and we keep it hidden, so someone (hopefully) can't easily run off with it). We went through a flood and were incredibly lucky- we didn't lose a single valuable thing. That was an eye-opener, to say the least. Renter's insurance and a good safe- two things we will never go without.

We were facing the same issues in our very long south-facing hallway and front foyer area (a switchback staircase in our entryway means that we have very tall walls and high, airy headspace).

We went with Behr's manhattan mist in the hallway (and Behr's gray timber wolf (off the same swatch) in the master bedroom, incidentally). I've never gotten more compliments on colour choice.

I LOVE this! Kathy, if you're reading, are you able to leave the pots out all winter, or do you have to recreate this garden every year?

We have a huge balcony, too, but we're in Boston, and nothing seems hardy enough to come back each year. I wish we could have something like this!

Whatever you do, do NOT use fondant. That stuff is nasty.

I'd use this recipe from Gale Gand:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/gale-gand/boston-cream-pie-recipe/index.html

Follow the directions and don't go with the tweaks in the comments.

Good luck!

Agreed with these two:

* rejoice that some people have work in these very hard times

* say hi to the workers... it's easier if you have friends working outside your window

We've lived in and around renovations, and while it can be tough, remember that the end result will probably be worth it. If you can afford it, take this as an opportunity to get out more- day trips, weekend trips, or just afternoons spent somewhere else!

You can also make Faux Umeshu if you can't find ume- just use hard, unripened apricots (I like them when they're in the turning from green to blush stage). Not quite the same as real umeshu, but still mighty tasty over ice in the summer!

What about something between paint and stain? Or something like whitewash?

I don't know if that's too much of a beachy feel for you.

I think that straight up paint could be awful if not done right, though- makes me think of people who paint over bathroom/kitchen tiles. Just makes the problem worse.

Something I read in one of Ina Garten's cookbooks a few years ago really resonated with me: basically, she says not to invite people with whom you DON'T want to spend time over for dinner parties, because it creates the uncomfortable back-and-forth invitation cycle that we all dread. That was a such a freeing thing to read, and I think it's really important to keep in mind amid all the excitement of, say, being a 20-something and finally having a place where you can have friends over for dinners. Life is too short!

My original comment seems to have been eaten!

It's Garnet Hill's Zinnia Pattern- they've carried it for the last few summers:

Just pickled 10 lbs of fiddleheads (a gift)! We've got half in a regular dill cucumber-type brine and half in a spicy brine. Yummm.

Having just cleaned all the baseboards, chair mouldings, windowsills and frams, and other wood-painted-white trim in our (rented) apartment, I will tell you that while it looks nice, white trim showcases dirt and dust beautifully.

I was in my hands and knees with a toothbrush, spray cleaner, and rags. Not the most fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

If you paint that trim white, be prepared to see dirt everywhere!

we're having a Mother's Day early dinner for mr. sfumato's mom! on the menu (so far):

*grilled blue cheese burgers, ribs (soy/mirin/garlic/grapefruit marinade) & hot italian sausages from our meat CSA

* german potato salad (http://www.saveur.com/article/Food/German-Potato-Salad)

* arugula & radicchio salad with quinoa, toasted pine nuts, parmesan & romano, and lemon vinaigrette

* chocolate (ganache) & caramel tart

she asked for meat, so she's getting meat!

These are also good with butter- my sister would very carefully mix up a tiny bowl of butter and honey to spread on bread. Yum!

I always make them for Baked Brie with Caramelized Onions (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Baked-Brie-with-Caramelized-Onions-1008; Bon Appétit | December 1995; requested by our friends at every party).

Whatever we haven't used (usually not much) usually gets frozen and eventually used as a pizza topping with mozzarella and chevre.
