Why let the pros have all the fun? Cutting mats is a precise craft, and certainly someone who does it several hours a day is better at it than I am. However, I find mat-cutting and framing to be a relaxing activity, and I get a lot of satisfaction from it (as with many other DIYs). Plus, I can easily switch prints into different size frames/different color mats, thus saving me the agony of deciding on the perfect mat/frame combo for a particular print. I have mixed woods within rooms throughout my house. The one thing that I don't like (and that I would encourage you to avoid) is having a wood tone that is very similar to a non-wood-finished item in the same room. For example, I have an old blonde-veneered chest that is quite close in color to a yellow-painted desk, and it is really not fun to look at them together! Cherry finished furniture in the same room with certain shades of red upholstery is also not my favorite combination. I prefer to have some contrast between the wood finishes and other major colors (walls, floor, sofa, window treatments) in the room. Does All the Wood Furniture in My Home Need to Match? I've never done a kitchen or bath remodel, but I would apply my approach to the smaller projects that I have tackled: do it right the first time. The owners here can do a superficial update-- replace the appliances, paint the cabinets, redo the floor and wall coverings-- but after all that work/expense, they'll still have a poorly-lit kitchen with drawers that stick, plus their appliance options will be limited due to the retro sizes/placements. If they cook at all, I am betting they won't be happy with this outcome. How Would You Modernize Betty Draper's 60s Kitchen? Budget Makeover Challenge Reader Intelligence Request |

I have always used email, Evite, or Paperless Post for invitations, but I'm toying with the idea of switching to written invites. Maybe it's just the people I'm inviting, but I have a HUGE issue getting timely RSVPs (or sometimes any response at all). Not a huge deal for a BBQ, but when I'm trying to plan a dinner party, it is really frustrating to have to follow up with people to get a head count. I'm wondering if hard copy invites and snail mail might lend a degree of formality that encourages my laid-back 20-something social circle to let me know whether they are coming or not! Above all, paint! (Like Pi said-- even if you like the current color.) If you have the physical space, make a little area for yourself with a comfy chair, reading lamp, throw blanket-- someplace you can relax away from the fam. And this might be difficult, but try to not buy everything new at once (or from the same store). I think one thing that characterizes a more "grown-up" space is that ever-elusive "collected" look. I have a basket-woven lidded hamper from IKEA (Naturlig; I think they might not have it anymore) that I keep by my closet. We do have a laundry chute, but it has some sharp edges in it (old house issues!) and I'm reluctant to toss my clothing through it. I do use the chute for towels, though, and my boyfriend uses it for all his clothes. Where Does Your Laundry Basket Live? Reader Survey |

I agree with the previous posters, and also suggest adding some more color/interest with a couple of ottomans/footstools to fill up the middle space a little better. A floor or table lamp (in addition to art & moving the deer head) would help fill the vertical space, and you could find/make a fun patterned drum shade. How To Improve Furnished Rental? I am all about some articles on interior painting projects, but I must be honest... I specifically avoid interior painting in the summer because I would so much rather spend my time outdoors when it's nice out! I can understand why folks might wait until summer to paint for ventilation reasons, but I have done all of my interior painting in fall, winter, and spring. Is it just me? Our CSA is like this, although I think they use the term "cooperative." The CSA folks drive around and pick up all the food, then the next day we pick up our bag. The variety is great, and even if growing conditions aren't ideal for one crop, there's always another item to take its place. We are going into our 3rd year getting most of our food from this source, and we love it! Are Food Hubs the Future of CSA's? |

The first summer in our house, we tried hanging a swing from two eyehooks that were already in our porch ceiling-- then sat down on it, had a brief moment of false triumph, and crashed to the ground. OUCH. A-frame it is. :) How To Install a Porch Swing |
