I think my feelings are in the middle too ... I really like this place a lot, but I don't see how different it is from most of the house tours, so I guess I don't understand all the wildly excited replies.

And as for renting for 12 years ... what's wrong with renting for 12 years? Plenty of people aren't in a position to own and/or don't want to commit to it. And especially in large cities, many people rent their whole lives.

I've eyed these for years, but they're actually really cheaply made, so I've resisted. I have one chair and matching table in this style that I bought from Crate & Barrel about a dozen years back (I could KICK myself for not buying the second chair) which is so hefty and substantial, that I can't bring myself to put the wimpy Target chairs next to it.

And yes, these metal chairs get KILLER hot in the summer. i actually keep mine indoors unless I'm using it to keep it from baking too long.

Oh this post comes right when I was just pining for my old cat Fellini. Very long story, but she was the sweetest little cat ever and my family had her callously put to sleep when I was out of town, when they didn't want to take care of her anymore and the pound didn't have room for her. (Believe it or not, this was one of the LEAST obnoxious things they've done.)

ANYhoo ... I pined for her for years and then when I was in product development for a large retailer, I used to sneak her pic onto just about anything cat related (calendars, stationery) so whenever I walked around the stores I could see her there. ;-)

The best ever was when I was sitting on the N train on a really bad morning and I looked up at the woman across from me and she was writing in a Fellini day planner ...

See, this is what I love (and hate) about the internet. You can reminisce about your old dorm room and end up with a big argument about the state of the world and the future of youth.

I vote in the order of how they're listed above.

It's funny, though ... I was thinking about Matthew's place, and I swear that if it was a girls' place, it wouldn't have done as well. Everyone would be all "you're so immature to have a kermit phone!" whereas with a guy it's sweet. Oh well. I still think it's the best!

The more I think about this, I actually can't believe this guy stayed. I mean, I understand holding onto your home on principal, but I would've honestly been scared for my life every day. That would've made it not a home at all.

Vincent, I have lots of those games too (although the Starsky & Hutch is lame because Huggy Bear isn't in it!) as well as bad 70s TV colorforms. (One can NOT live without a set of CHiPs colorforms!)

I've sold off some of my collections, but I still have:

Simpsons stuff (mostly toys)
50s magazines
toy-themed keychains
metal lunchboxes
James Bond & Peanuts paperbacks
food-related (especially ice cream) memorabilia
milk glass (especially cakeplates)
robot toys

I'm sure there are more collections, but some are packed away and the rest are grouped together in various places. I have a reasonably sized place with a lot of storage, so it's not overwhelming at all.

Lisa, sorry to disappoint you, but it's been done before many times ... several years ago. No one "stole" your idea, as you put it. (And I'm not saying that with a snotty tone ... I know it's hard to read expression sometimes without emoticons.)

AT's only covering it now because it was brought up in the smallest/coolest contest. Proof evident in the comment that they didn't notice the interiors when they saw the film. (I mean ... who couldn't notice those amazing interiors????) I agree that they should've at least put up more pics to do the post justice.

Anyone else suspicious that the last few "wow!" comments were all by first-time posters?

Incidentally, I voted "cool" ... nothing about it excites me, but it's a start in the right direction, and the bones of the apartment are cool.

Michael, to answer your question directed at me ... you absolutely CAN evolve your style. 7 years is a long time to live in a place without making any changes. I too have been in the same place (albeit on-and-off) since 2001 and I've changed each room in it at least 2 or 3 times depending on art, furniture, etc. that I've cycled in and out or whatever. But that is precisely why I haven't entered any of these contests yet ... because each time they roll around (color contest, etc.) I always seem to have one room or another in a state of transition and I didn't feel like it would be a cohesive entry. So if you have artwork on the way or whatever, you have to accept comments that may point out the place looking unfinished ... especially if as someone else pointed out ... you are quick to make the same criticisms of other entries.

I like minimalist style (although I don't like to live in it myself) and have voted super cool on many of those places. Yours, I'm sorry, just looks unfinished. I do, however, like the bones of the place which is why I initially voted cool.

I like how they limited it to 10 as if to make it super exclusive. Rather, they're not sure they could sell more (if that at all)
