Small Space Lessons: Floorplan and Solutions from Stephanie's Best Year Yet

One day when I was a teen, at a flea market I saw a pan with round pimples in it about twice the size of golf balls, I asked my Finnish decent grandmother what could it be, she said "It's and Ishkabibble pan, you make pancake batter and keep turning it to make a round dough ball" Fast forward 10+ years latter and Williams Sanoma and Nordic ware are making ebelskiver pans and they are all the rage. I still call them Ishkabibbles.

That is a huge chunk of change, but being NYC, and after having lived in SF for over 17 years I am pretty this is very accurate, if this place is a walk up remember everything has to be brought up stairs.

If building managers/owners are anything like in SF, and I am sure they are they tend to be cheap greedy and lazy. They will not invest into the improvements of a place unless they feel they can milk it out of a new renter, as a new owner, she is making the best investment for herself. If and or when she chooses to sell and move she will be getting her investment several times over I am sure. That being said, I damn glad to have moved to the low rent district out of town. We have a 100+ year old kitchen in our new place and hopefully someday will be able to renovate it, and since we no longer live in the city it will be maybe a half or a third what this one will cost and it is a fairly huge kitchen.

I have made bed sheets before for a client, they were made of quilting cotton. They were for her college age daughter. They turned out great, they had to be seamed, I used a flat felled seam. The bottom sheet was a box made this way, and the flat sheet had seams on each side of the full length of quilting fabric. I have not had time to make some out of linen for my self, just had a baby, but when I do I will be buying from this place. http://www.fabrics-store.com/

I bought linen from them for table cloths for my wedding, they have a bolt for a great price.

The fridge is SMEG. Thought about one for our kitchen when we moved in, but went with huge but lovely whirlpool in white ice.

I want to do something like this in our kitchen, all the stuff is all over the place right now, but we just moved into our first home and the kitchen it at least 100 years old so outlets are not in the best spot, the second longest wall only has one outlet and it has the 60+ year old stove and the fridge plugged into it. Since the cabinets are like I said 100+ years old they are only 20" deep, and the counter slope towards the sink. :) Sigh to have a whole new kitchen with this included. Bar in the dining room is so much easier, which will happen when I find a good antique one, or convert one. Love the libations, boozy or otherwise.

I too like both, as for the fridge hinges, think about it, if they moved them the door would not open fully up, this way you can open the door to it's full extent.

We just recently replaced a really old one. I noticed that it tended to overcook certain dishes because it was too hot, and I wanted to get a nice modern one since we also just bought a house and have not replaced anything in over 10 years, not even when we got married! We bought the crock pot one based on Cooks Illustrated. I have used it twice so far I really love it. Large enough to replace using our dutch oven, plus I do not have to do so much work to get food that tastes like I spent many hours on it.

I agree will the whole list, and can add many more. We buy our meat from the butcher at the SF ferry building, for the most part, Prather ranch, it is organic, grass fed, pastured, humanly raised and slaughtered, and for SF, the price is not as bad as many of the regular butchers her.

My big add is great milk, I once read and article about how to buy cheap milk, that no one could taste difference. I was shocked, just because they only .69 a gallon form the k-mart, (i don't know if it was k-mart, but it was .69 a gallon!), anyway, I notice a huge difference from organic to non organic, and many of the different organic brands, Horizon is OK, but Clover is much more milky and flavorful, but hands down it Straus, but that is link of like comparing an egg Mcmuffin to eggs Benedict.

Guilty! All those bags from the farmers market most get emptied, but many remain in the bag I purchased them in. :)

on a side note, if you are ever in San Francisco, Swensens ice cream, the original still exists in Russian hill, they make a sticky chewy chocolate ice cream that tastes like tootsie rolls. :)

There are more like instant hard shell for ice cream, and homemade cinnamon toast crunch. Evil, I tells ya!

My husband and I began making these last year as a way of getting more protein in our diet, We love these and the recipe lends it self to lots of changes and replacements. Like adding super sweet grape tomatoes, or toasted walnuts, and cumin. they are really good to change with what every you have to add with the zucchini and chickpea flour spice mix.

Ha, to me this is not a tiny kitchen, I lived in a less than 600 sft apartment for over ten years, You could fit my kitchen into a corner of her kitchen. :) I also cooked and baked for up to 8 people in it. This would have been such a luxury to have, great layout, a window, and lots of shelf's and counters. We had maybe 36" of counter and half of that was taken up by the dish rack, and on drawer. Great for a rental, very impressed with size and layout.

I checked the link for the Oreo cookie pancakes, yes it sends you to a broken link, but it was not that hard to find the recipe by going to the list of recipes from that site, here is the direct link. http://minimalistbaker.com/oreo-cookie-pancakes/
