For furniture? Recycled Brooklyn. Hands down. I covet everything in his store. If only I lived closer...

At first glance, I thought this was a Guess-the-Decade post. How cool is that living room?!?!

Did anyone else have nostalgic pains for the old Illinois licenses? Like the one in the picture where your face is the shape of the state...

*sigh* I miss those.

That first picture, to me, is such a Chicago apartment. I wish I had a fireplace in my home. <3

Ah, Craigslist. I joke that I've found my whole life on there. Which isn't far from the truth (my apartment, my couch, my cat, my bed frame...)

My suggestion for CL apartment searching is to try under the Sublet/Temporary postings. Oftentimes, this is the current resident trying to find someone to take over the lease and you can get a good deal. Either the current tenant is desperate and they'll pay part of the rent, or you can get the price they currently pay before the landlord raises rent (putting you in a better position to negotiate at lease end).

Sometimes they will sugarcoat the description if they really need to sublet soon, but mostly the descriptions are just all around more accurate.

Plus, I find the regular apartments for rent section is overwhelmed with rental companies posting apartments and it looks like there might be a picture, and then it's just the company logo. Time waster. I guess I need that greasemonkey thing... :)

I love this idea! I have a new kitten and have decided to forgo a tree this year because of her. I'll be using the ornaments I already have and a wire hanger. My price = $0. :o)

Ditto the craft items.

And books.

And bulky, old, wooden furniture that doesn't match, but it was my grandmother's and has sentimental value.

And the cosmetics. I did a big purge recently and got rid of an entire large sized shopping bag of toiletries. Still overflowing.

And lots of other things I "might" use or need someday.

I'm very much a warm personality (read: pack rat). My whole family is...

Yay! I'm so excited. I started reading AT last year just in time to miss the start of the cure. I've read the book twice since then, but I'm a "Yes, a lot!" answer to the survey above, so it has been a slow start for me...

can't wait though!

My problem is actually the start of my private porch. The space is awkwardly shaped, like a bay window. But I don't want to put anything there because then I'd be blocking the sliding door. It bothers me to no end and feels like wasted space.

I bought a couch off Craigslist for $50 because I was having the hardest time getting my new kitten to stop scratching the good couch. The $50 sofa was already scratched up by the previous owners cat.

Turns out, it's WAY more comfy than the $800 couch I had before. And it still sits in the living room as the main couch. Ugly as sin.

I haven't lived with my british father for years...but this made me sublimely happy to see others were fed "beans on toast" as kids!

It was my second favorite breakfast, bested only by "eggs and soldiers".

Nostalgia has kicked in big time and I think I'll be adding all these items to my next grocery list!

I have been car-less for over a year now and people ask me all the time how I do it...but I love it! I live in Chicago and my neighborhood is perfect for public transportation, I'm within a 3 block walk of 3 train lines and too many bus routes to count.

I've officially decided I will never live anywhere where I can't live without a car. And after over $500 in assorted tickets from the city in a two year span, I don't miss it one bit! All those tickets made me hate the color orange for awhile...

You can call ComEd directly and they will tell you the monthly average for the unit you intend to rent. People's Gas will not tell you though, you have to submit a request for disclosure form to the city.

I too, have had the sticker shock of my gas going up when I started using heat for the winter. Last November I paid $40 for my gas bill, by December it was $200. This is on a 1br in an old building with pathetic insulation.

If you can find a place with decent rent where the heat is included (these are almost always radiator units) I would snap it up. Utility bills are no fun, and neither is dealing with their customer service...

I did a little more digging and see it's an estate sale and the agent is Meladee Hughes. Any relation to John, I wonder???

I recognized it too! Breaks my heart a little to see it for sale. At first I thought $2.3 million sounded low...but the property being listed "as is" means it probably hasn't been taken care of very well. :(

Living in a rental, I feel very limited with my decorating options. But during my weekend cleaning ritual, I rolled up my rugs and put them in storage. Such a big result from a small idea! I forget how good plain wood floors look sometimes...

Thanks for the great suggestions!
