I love this! Will it be a series? Are there more locales to come?

In the title of 9, it should be use what "you've got," not what "you're got."

Small Budget, Big Impact Part 2: Tips 4, 5 and 6!

I'm realistic - when I work, I have half as much time in a day, so about 1/3 as much free time. (Not to mention less mental energy because of working all day). That's just not enough to fit in everything I did on vacation. I have to pick and choose.

Typically, I choose working out, and extra sleep (8.5 hours each night). But maybe I don't beat myself up about not cooking every night or keeping my herb garden alive.

I'm with Gise. I can clean my one bedroom top to bottom in a Saturday. No way you can do that with a 4 bedroom in the burbs.

Why Do You Live Small?
4/6/11 11:47 AM

I have never been able to get up easily. I would have a bedtime 8 hours from waking up time, fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, and still be exhausted in the morning and throughout the day.

Now, I sleep for 9 or 10 hours. It sounds like I'm sleeping my life away, but my quality of live is much improved. I wake up about 5 to 10 minutes before the alarm every morning.

I tried all the other stuff... curtains, foods, temperature. But I just wasn't getting enough. And now I'm more productive that I was before, because I'm well rested and don't spend the first half of my day in a fog. So, you might add to this list trying MORE sleep.

The coloring won't effect the bowl? How would you explain a toilet that was permanently orange?

I like the idea of shelving cut at an angle. I think you may be able to use this:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20118174

or some heavier duty version. It could hold plates/ pans against the sloped wall with out them hanging straight down, into your workspace. You could also try only keeping the dishes you use in the kitchen (2 plates, 2 bowl, set of silverware, a few cups) and storing the rest. That would leave the rest of you cabinets for food and cookware.

What To Do With Small, Angled Ceiling Kitchen?
Good Question

I lived in one bedroom for three years... sharing the rest of the space with 5 roommates. That amounted to 120 square feet for me, and a bathroom and kitchen I shared with 5 other people.

Now I live in a little one bedroom with my partner. about 6 months in, I started to itch for a bigger place again. I thing we want the ratio of (stuff we have) : (space we have) to be right. We think we want more space, but that's because we also have and want more stuff.

So instead of moving AGAIN, we purged about 10% of our stuff, and stopped bringing in new crap.

Life is good. 400 sq ft is way easier to clean and maintain that a 3 bed, 2.5 bath dream home with a lawn. So for now, we'll stay where we are.

I second lepidoptery... everything looks great with a black leather sofa. It's not that hard.

I want to see a post on how to make something REALLY ugly look good. Like those plaid and wood sofas mentioned above.

I like the idea... it would be great for working on group projects too (I'm thinking homework night... not game night.)

I would be worried people would think all the walls are okay to write on, specifically children. Maybe if all the other walls were a different color?

I like what dc.d said. If you do laundry frequently, there's less to do and less around. 1 set of pj's and towels, 2 pairs of jeans, etc. I do laundry every 4 days or so (1 load delicates, 1 load colors, for me and my partner). If you let it go 1 month or more between laundries, it'll be a mess no matter where/ how you store it.

I once has a roommate who had 3 months worth of underwear, bras, clothes and sheets. Every three months, she would spend the whole weekend doing laundry. This is the other end of the spectrum... It worked for her, but she needed more storage space for her clothes and linens, and more clothes and linens!

We made soap and candles this year. Both projects were much easier than I thought they would be!

And don't buy the super expensive candle coloring... you can just use crayons!

My boyfriend and I were all moved in after 1 week. The biggest help was having a floorplan. We used:

http://www.homestyler.com/designer

It allowed us to get a good sense of how the space would feel with furniture laid out (there is an easy 3D option). This meant that we spent some time figuring out in the previos weeks where everything should go, but that as we moved in, we knew right where everything should go.

Also, we saved hanging things on the wall until last... as a reward for unpacking all the boxes.
