To me, garnishes have come a long way since the parsley on the plate (and I honestly don't remember seeing that anywhere in a long time). Now it's still a visual element, but it also adds to the flavor. And being added at the last minute, it holds its distinct character instead of having been cooked into the dish. Even the formerly silly parsley garnish brings a fresh flavor to the plate when finely chopped and sprinkled over the food. What's the Deal with Garnish? | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

I seriously had a Pavlovian response to this photo and recipe. Will be making this soon. Another great thing to do with tiny potatoes is roast them with rosemary, preferably in duck fat. Spring Recipe: Teeny-Tiny New Potatoes with Lemon | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

Hands down, my favorite kitchen tool I picked up at IKEA is the DIREKT Whisk. Its flat mixing head makes it perfect for whisking something into shallow liquid in a sauté panâsay making a roux or mixing in corn starch or something else that might want to turn to lumps. The DIREKT Whisk won't let it. Iâve seen similar versions made of tightly coiled metal, but the business end of the DIREKT Whisk is made of heat-resistant plastic--that means it wonât scratch non-stick surfaces. And best of all? It costs about two bucks. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Roundup: Best of IKEA For the Kitchen |

Great tips on Craigslist hunting! I've only found a couple of things there, but they've been biggies. First, tickets to a sold out rock show the day of the concert and, even bigger, our current apartment. Apartment Therapy New York | How To: Search on CraigslistBoston |

Cast iron is fine, but there are times you just want a slippery non-stick surface. I've also bought numerous cheap non-stick pans and had to replace them every year or two. A gift certificate nudged me to splurge on a high-end non-stick pan, a deep one with a glass lid. You know what? After a year or two, it stopped being very non-stick. Now I use it as a fine, heavy pan when I don't need non-stick. But I've learned my lesson about spending too much on non-stick. Buy something cheap but with enough heft to it that the pan is obviously thick. Use it 'til it wears out, then replace it. I remember reading a story somewhere about a family trying to recreate a deceased grandmother's glorious chocolate chip cookies. She had never written the recipe down, and various family members did everything but hold a séance to contact her spirit to figure it out. Then someone baked the recipe on the back of the Nestle Toll House chocolate chips package. Bingo. Apartment Therapy The Kitchen | Kitchen Confessional: Good Recipes from the Back of the Box? |

There must be something in the air! Mushrooms are all over the food blogs. Great timing too, as scientists are reporting the antioxidant health benefits of the plain old button mushroom compared to its more exotic, more expensive relatives. And combined with a few simple ingredients, the humble button mushroom can taste pretty amazing, as your recipe demonstrates. I don't have an answer about your specific problem, but in a sort of related direction, never store onions and potatoes together. It will hasten the spoiling of both of them. Apartment Therapy The Kitchen | Good Question: Why Are My Onions Rotten Inside? |

These look gorgeous and sound delicious. I think I might even dispense with the onions, though, and add some loose rosemary leaves to the mix along with the sprigs. It's such a great flavor combo, I don't think it needs the onions. Apartment Therapy - Recipe: Confetti Potatoes and Pearl Onions |

Okay, here's an 18" version of the hotel towel rack available on Amazon. Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: What Should I Use to Hold My Towels? |

Just google hotel towel rack and you'll find numerous suppliers. We bought an 18" variety, which took some doing to find, but we had a narrow space. Can't remember where we got it [sorry], but we like it a lot. Here's a link to a 24" model. Keep in mind, the overall width is slightly wider than 24", which is the width of the shelf itself. Book abuse aside, even with no other clutter in sight, that shelf looks like a jumbled mess. Books arranged standing vertically or stacked on shelves create a nice sense of order, even in an otherwise cluttered room. Apartment Therapy - Sean Yoo's Opus Shelving at DWR |

In looking for apartments in Chicago, I would call phone numbers in ads or on signs only to hear a dozen beeps or more of people who'd called and left messages before me. So I developed this tactic. When I left the message, I would say, "I realize you're getting tons of calls about this apartment. Here's why you should call me first." Then I would quickly market myself--good job, reliability, "I love the neighborhood" [so they know you're not going to show up and reject the place because of where it is], I've lived in my current place X years, etcetera. It worked. I found one place where we lived for 10 years, and we're in another great place now where I used the same technique in an email responding to a Craigslist ad. I'm personally not saddened by its demise. As a fan of the Times, I'm also heartened that the reason they did so was a smart business choice, not a defeat. Because they can make more money selling online ads than subscriptions, it just made sense to make everything as available to as many eyes as possible. Apartment Therapy - Times Select is Dead... |

We have a couple sets of flutes--well a whole one and an earlier partial set that caused us to buy the new one [we couldn't find the old style anymore]. We also have a set of white wine glasses and five glorious red wine glasses from Tiffany's, the remainder of another couple's wedding present. They NEVER drink wine [the missing sixth glass broke in a move], so passed them along to us. They are so thin and light, like glass bubbles, it's almost like drinking from air. I never understand the thought of not cooking because you're cooking for one. I'm usually cooking for two [or more], but on those occasions I'm alone, I enjoy cooking precisely what I want to eat when I want to eat it. And when I've cooked for one for extended periods, I generally cook for two anyway and treat the leftovers as a future dinner or lunch.
