Pardon my ignorance, but are we certain that it's safe to have curtains hanging over heaters and radiators? I ask because mine are now pinned up in a very unflattering way to avoid risk of fire. Many kitchen stores sell zebrawood (or a very realistic-looking zebrawood veneer, which would eliminate the problem that ursamajor describes above) cabinetry and such, and almost all of them will custom make you a table from any material they sell. It might cost a pretty penny, but it'll be exactly what you want. I'd recommend MCKB on 19th Street. They have a nice zebrawood display in their showroom.
