Shutters are my preferred option. I use them all through my home. They provide the ultimate in privacy, but can be leveraged for the exact amount of light that you want and opened totally. The only drawback is that one must be vigilant about dusting, but with the dusting products on the market it's really not much of an issue. The shutters can match your woodwork, trim or may be in contrasting color.

As to the rug, an oriental - not original - is always a great choice. It disguises dirt and provides the option of integrating a lot of colors in a subtle way that you can then use to complement or feature in your room.
