Since you are in San Fran, you might check into acoustic curtains... audio people use them for sound booths- they do not block sound but dampen sound down a lot. Sometimes they have a vinyl side which I would put toward the kitchen, as kitchens have more airborne grease particles.

Nice smile from your pooch!

I agree that it should be something that you love. And, I agree that lighting is important. I'm not so sure that I would put shelves in unless you are dying for shelf space. I think the long lines are nice. I also agree that how it relates to what is around it is important.

The placement is a bit odd in the room.

IDEAS, for you to feed off of to help you find what you love:

A tall, tiered candle holder? Or hanging candle lanterns (morrocan comes to mind, but that might be last year's trend...)

Plant (something tall and striking)?

Something that conceptually bridges the living room and kitchen? Where is your dining area? Maybe a pretty, tall wine rack if you enjoy such things?

A photo montage of important moments in your life in a planned, visually integrated fashion.

Please show us what beautiful thing you do later when you have made the change!

I HAVE LOFTY FEELINGS FOR CHRONICAL BOOKS- seriously, I used to be a bookseller, and they are a greay publisher!

This is surprising. Recall Garden Botanika? In contrast, they closed their brick & mortars and went with affiliates and web. No telling how they are doing.

I dislike Pier 1 for the strong perfumed aroma when you are in their stores - anyone with sensitivities are right back out the door!!!

La Canada Big Lots has a Pier 1 sighting too.

I tested these related to event work - see my blog-ette memorablegatherings@blogspot.com and look under event lighting. The problem with these LEDs is that the light is very unnatural in color and the flicker effect on them "strobes". The only solutions that I have found:

FOR STROBING: when placed in clusters, the strobing seems to have less visual impact. Also placing them at distant locations for light punctuation.

FOR COLOR: ammending the shade with color to color-correct the tone. I have used paint and colored paper to warm and help the color be less cold-green/yellow.

Otherwise, I think that these have value and should be considered for lighting solutions.

Huntington, in total, is not an example of xeriscaping either - this particular photographed section is. Huntington has a variety of plant sections, as do all botanical gardens - they have "collections" and call it a "living museum". Descanso has a native garden section that can serve as a role model for a certain approach to landscaping. Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden is an example of all of the acreage being native plants. The Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys is a LUSH Japanese garden done with - you guessed it - all reclaimed water.

The point is that there are many ways to be water-concious in a garden and we benefit from the lessons of all gardens- they are public spaces that are of incredible value in an overcrowded urban environ.

Congrats on your wedding! And a nice solution to share with others- thanks! I face these issues all the time and have an arsenal of tricks for going without power or dealing with environmental contingencies.

FYI, there are solar-powered versions of the Shoji Lantern out there too, and if you knew that the environ was sunny, OR if you were hosting something less stressful than a wedding (weddings - you want to reduce any uncertainty for a wedding!) you could use these for a more environmental sensitive choice. Look at gardeners.com.
