How perfectly apt that Mary Roach, who writes hilariously and in a very approachable way about topics that are just so universally interesting, would live in a home that reflects all those characteristics! The humor, honesty, comfort, friendliness, and also clearly smart & creative elements in her home fit the personality that comes through in her books. Love her, love her home.

I am exactly the opposite!! (Well, except I'm lazy, too.) I live in an 80 year old house with tons of drawers and cabinets and I swear there are ones I haven't opened in 3 years. If something goes in a drawer, it is essentially gone. Drawers and cabinets are, for me, "deep" storage and so I am forced to keep my piles to a minimum just out of self-defense. I deal with all mail immediately. The only bill we write out is our mortgage and we have a good little system for that. Otherwise all of it is online. Clothes, too, stay out once washed to force me to fold and put them away properly asap. I, too, love clear surfaces, but at the same time, sometimes I like seeing my stuff. Does that make sense? But then again, we don't have children...

My favorite is how the word "beautiful" is literally only ever used in a CL furniture posting to describe items from the 1970's or so that used to be called "Early American" style.

I hate to chime in with a negative here, especially since you both agreed on it (I know how hard that can be since color is so subjective), but our large bedroom is "tiffany blue" and I can't stand it! Lately, it looks dated to me and also it just seems to lack the sophistication of the rest of the colors in our home. I think something with a little gray in it would be nicer, and either greener or bluer. I like nataboo9's idea of doing multiple shades/variations on the color, and not just top-to-bottom "tiffany." Good luck and please post the final results!!

JYW, you have asked the best question. Why do it? What is the real point? If things are working okay, why mess with it?

I heard that same NPR piece and then read up a little on some forums, and started to get mad that I'm spending money on something that is, essentially, unnecessary. We really don't have to do anything to our hair at all, just get some smells out after a a garlicky dinner or a campfire! So I chose to go no-poo back in March and have stuck with it all this time. I did BS and ACV, and I kept the BS solution in an old shampoo bottle, pre-mixed, and the same with the ACV solution -- kept it in my conditioner bottle.

At one point, when I was really flush with cash, I went out on a limb and bought the incredibly pricey, aforementioned Deva No-Poo and matching conditioner, and it really is great. Unfortunately, it may serve as a gateway because I think when these bottles are done I may just get some organic shampoo/conditioner (I've heard that J/A/S/O/N is good and no SLS). So really, I've come full-circle and have decided that I will return to shampooing at some point. Not because I have to, but because I like doing it. And the smell. Love the smell!

A friend of mine painted her grout around her kitchen tile and it came out great. What about bright-white grout? I found this how-to link: http://www.ehow.com/how_2078917_paint-old-tile-grout.html

I agree that I'd ditch the retro dinette set, then view your checkerboard flooring as "vintage" (as opposed to 50's diner). The columns currently look out-of-place next to the decidedly un-rustic look of everything else. Maybe you could white-wash the walls, and paint the kitchen something warm and perhaps add in a couple of other more rustic touches to help those columns not look so lonely. I'm thinking wooden shutters at the windows and/or some not-too-prim wainscotting. Then you could even go a step further and distress the pure-white cabinets -- just sand a little around the edges.

I agree with the other posters that framing the mirror would be cool, but I was more struck by the awkward placement of the towel bar. What if you used something scavenged for a set of hooks? Or something I've always wanted to do is find just the back part of a ladderback chair and use it for hanging towels. Also, I've noticed more and more people using large hanging lights in the bathroom. How about one of those inexpensive round lanterns (I'd go with nylon since paper would fall apart in the bathroom's moist environment). I bought some from here recently http://www.asianimportstore.com/nylonlanterns.html And the other thing I thought of for you, since you have the scavenging gift -- look for a teak table that would fit your sink, cut off the top and trim the legs to size, and fit the plumbing from the back.
