Urban Outfitters has some cute mid century looking convertible sofas (sofa + bed). They're affordable and would probably be super easy to get up those stairs! Plus, they have some fun colors!

@ Mama Gigi-- GAH! I feel your pain. I HATE that! We were about to buy a plycraft lounge chair for $300 when the owner told us it was available, and then avoided our emails for a day and then told us it eventually sold. Ass.

In those situations, I usually like to send the "craigslist etiquette" website. The karma message is a good idea too.

Those kind of people suck. Hard.

Here is what I do:

With veggie burgers etc. I will "defrost" them in the microwave. Usually about 30 seconds. After then, I place them on the grill for the smokey flavor and heat.

I also agree with Soccorjo. The majority of people aren't familiar with grilling these types of foods, so try it yourself! Direct flame/ heat isn't usually necessary. Also, try pressing your tofu next go around! It willl soak up the marinade and taste extra "meaty"!.

Good luck!

Wouldn't it make more sense to be asking this question as you get closer to your move in date? If you're moving in a few years, I wouldn't get attached to a neighborhood now... Neighborhoods are constantly changing. This question is silly.

This recipe is awesome, and will probably be a staple in our house from now on =)

We used the oven and Ms. Renfro's jalepeno green salsa. Its super spicy, but VERY YUMMY.

As a tip, I had to microwave each tortilla for 10 seconds in order for them to fold without breaking.

As an advocate who works at DV shelters and within the domestic violence realm, I am at awe of how nicely done the space is. While it is clear that a lot of people are complaining, I am wondering why no one else has brought what I've been thinking up.

The space is clearly beautiful, but I can't help but wonder how the money to furnish this one space could have been used to furnish MORE spaces. As an advocate, we know that the most common problem is unavailability of space for women fleeing their abuser. I just think that having (hypothetically speaking) 15 spaces furnished with less fancy furniture and decor rather than 8 ubber fancy apartments is way more USEFUL of the money. I mean the ultimate goal is to help the most women, not just a few who want to stay in a nice place. While shelters are less then perfect in regards to decor etc., the primary concern here is safety, not how "homey" or "nice" the space is.

Wouldn't you rather have more women be able to be safe, in a less nice apartment, rather than fewer women be incredibly comfortable in a space they're only temporarily staying in?

Just saying..

We used ABF (upack.com). If you can reserve a trailer months ahead of time, the rates are really low. Also, the amount you spent is largely dependent on the amount you pack, which is great if you dont have much stuff and/or can get rid of stuff before the move.

Also, its WAY cheaper then U-haul/Budget rentals. They drop off the trailer for you, you fill it up, and they drive it to your new house. Its makes moving across the country a lot easier (especially if you have to bring a car). I HIGHLY recommend it. Great service, great experience. Made moving a lot less stressful =D

We also used ABF (upack.com) for our move from Columbia, MO to Austin, TX. While filling the trailer was like an intense tetris game, we managed to save more money by reducing our square footage used.

The estimated delivery time was exact and we got our shipment within three days. (A word to the wise: If they go over the EDT, ask for a discount.. they'll give it to you).

I also wish we got rid of some of our ikea furniture, as it didn't hold up as nicely as I wanted. But for an 800 mile move at under $1200, it was well worth it =)

AT must be having a hard time finding more homes to show because our home was already showcased a few months ago, but hey, I dont mind the extra attention =D!

Our house is sadly, much less furnished and packed in boxes. We are moving to Austin in 8 days!

@ModTramp --- The rug is from FLOR. It was a super splurge, but its been awesome. I believe its called Fedora 2.

@Molly Margarita --- The art is by Jen Lobo.

WOW!

Thanks you guys! The posts are unbelievable. I really appreciate the help =)

My partner and I have decided that we are ultimately going to have to drive down to Austin at the end of May/ Early June and do a mad rush for housing. I'm definitely going to use this post. I've heard about the eastside having "dicey" neighborhoods, but I'm glad to hear there is some hope =) ... we live in a (perceived) "dicey" neighborhood, but its a lot safer than people think. haha.

Anyways, thank you again. ATer's effing rock!

Like ameliepoulain, I too am moving to Austin. My partner and I plan on moving in July and have had a really difficult time finding something we love (we are in love with our current place, but we're moving from MO so I can attend grad school at UT). It seems like we keep comparing what we find to our current place.

Anyone have any Austin house hunting tips? Ideally, we would like a detached house with lots of character and charm. Pet friendly and hardwood floors. We'll compromise with having to share walls if we're in a complex ... as long as it has those other things. We're also working with a tight budget ($800 for rent only).

Ameliepoulain, have you had much luck? Craigslist is flooded with realtors and frat boy apartment complexes (no thanks).

Help!?
