The problem with the update-your-kitchen-to-sell-your-house notion is that it has resulted in scads of houses with hideous "updated" kitchens that look like ripped directly from a display at Lowe's. I'm all for a kitchen that isn't dirty, broken, or otherwise blatantly falling apart, but I'd rather have an outdated kitchen I could redo myself, according to my own taste and within my own budget, then a brand-new kitchen that I don't even like built into the asking price of the house.

Overall I love the feel of this place. It is well thought out and seems to reflect the personality of the occupant. I was initially tempted to hate on the mini-golf green color of the living room rug, but I suspect it looks better IRL then it does in the photograph here.

Re: the cinder block bookshelf. I love the stacks of books and the irregular shelf heights, but I guess I'm on the side of ditching the cinder blocks post college. They shed dust and grime and stacking the blocks three high at the top feels a bit perilous.

You can accomplish something very similar by cutting old/reclaimed trestles or beams to matching heights, then use them just as you would the cinder blocks. Cheap and rustic, but less temporary feeling.

I'm having trouble focusing on the furnishings. That may be the least flattering lighting I've ever seen. The lamps are all crouched beneath the chairs like squirrels. I don't get it.

I stick with unscented candles and get fragrance from those home fragrance diffusers (with the reeds stuck in a glass bottle of perfumed oil). You can get very nice versions from Target for $10-15. They last much longer than candles and often smell better.

Buying a chair to cover your exposed thong is like buying a house to cover your naked body. If one is having problems with an exposed thong, one might consider their pants choice prior to investing in new chairs.
