You could easily hang a mirror or art from the ceiling closer to the front edge of the mantle to visually shorten the space, the style accessories in front of that creating a visual sense that it isn't as deep as it really is.

How To Style a Deep Corner Mantelpiece? Good Questions

Depends on where you live really, but judging by the picture I would estimate somewhere between $500-$750 dollars for materials and labor. It appears that you need a new cushion which is I went higher, and a lot of it will depend on where you live.

As far as the material, that will cost you extra and before you run out and buy your upholstery fabric, make sure your upholsterer will work with it. Corduroy does sound nice but if you just go to a fabric store and buy some, odds are it won't be durable enough and you'll have to reupholster the chair again...and sooner than you would like. If you look for a upholstery fabric that is a corduroy you'll do much better in the long run. Many upholstery shops could give you a recommendation or they often times sell textiles as well.

I would take the chair or pictures of the front, back, sides and underside of the chair to an upholstery shop and get a quote for materials and labor. They will also be able to tell you how much fabric you need, how wide it should be, etc... You might also ask if the price would change depending a plain v. patterned upholstery. Pattern matching might be more expensive than doing it in say a plain upholstery fabric.

Whether or not it's worth it is up to you.

Nice job! I wouldn't change a thing.

now about that Harmony House dresser....I'd go in through the drawer openings and see if you can remove the entire top. Then replace it with a sweet slab of marble. :)

I gave my bedroom a makeover a few years back and based it all around two window valances that I salvaged from another designer. They were made incorrectly for her client, but there was nothing wrong with them, beautiful Osborne and Little fabric, and no one wanted to just throw them out. I took them because I liked them and I hate seeing things go to waste.

I thought about it and decided that they would be the jumping off point for my bedroom. So after a month of all that the design process involves, and about $2500 later my room was done. I was laying in bed one morning and realized...I hate this room. It was beautiful, but it wasn't me. It was all about the valances which I liked and appreciated but I didn't LOVE them.

Lesson learned: If I don't LOVE it, it doesn't come in my house.

Personally, I prefer to send a small bouquet of flowers the day before the party. I say small because 1) I don't expect them to use my flowers as a centerpiece 2) they can tuck them away on a nightstand for themselves 3) they find a place for the them in the powder room or somewhere else if they would like 4) when the flowers die they don't have something they don't know what to do with.

I also write on the enclosure card something to the effect of, "Dear ___________, Looking forward to tomorrow night. You have the best parties! (or you always make everyone feel so welcome or An evening with friends is the perfect way to end the week ...you get the idea.)

Also sending it the day ahead tells them you are looking forward to the event and it doesn't add to one more thing to do the day of party and if they forget or don't have a centerpiece you have helped without knowing it.

5 Things You Should Never Bring as a Hostess Gift

I just spit coffee all over my desk laughing about the "flaming headless pilgrims". My mom has/had similar candles but ours also included a turkey...equally gruesome if flaming and headless.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday too, and I don't really have any one thing that I cherish or have a strong tie to, but it's the traditions of setting the table, using the best/favorite china, linens, crystal, etc... I love the finery of it...even the really traditional stuff, but I like to mix them with modern things to start my own traditions and create new memories.

The holidays are what you make them. If you make it hectic and set high expectations and have long lists to complete and you over plan you are going to be exhausted and stressed and a mess. I make them simple.

This is my favorite time of the year. I love this change of seasons the most so that helps. I keep things simple though so maybe that helps me enjoy them. My holiday shopping for gifts is almost done only because I only buy things I can't make myself...I bought three things (from a non-profit) to give as gifts on my list.

I have a list of TO DO's of things I'm going to make but started this last weekend making two tree skirts...one for my sister's family and one for my brother's family which will be their main gift but there are some fun little things thrown in for the kiddos. I only have a few other things to make and I should be done the first week of December.

I also am taking Thanksgiving off this year. I'm going to have my own little Thanksgiving by myself actually. And I'm REALLY looking forward to it. Some people don't understand it and my family wishes but I would come home, but I have seen them a lot lately and I think the third Thursday of November isn't a very good reason to be thankful for all I have, the people I love, and to overeat.

I used to have the pleasure of working with Chelsea, and Chelsea...Wisconsin misses you! I like how the stripes are broken up with the picture and they almost frame it again which makes for a really great composition on this wall. Nice work.

I totally agree! This whole trend of salvaging and repurposing is great, however you cannot just go out and grab any old thing, haul it into your house and start using it in it's raw state. I personally think you should test it or make sure that the use has nothing to do with food or kids or pets. It looks cool, but....

I might also add this fabric is probably more than $250.00/yard. Good news is you probably only need one yard assuming the back is a different fabric.

This is a Nina Campbell fabric from the Paradiso Autumn 2010 collection and appears to be color 03 and the pattern is embroidered on the fabric. Nina Campbell is carried by Osborne + Little if your are outside of the UK and is probably available for order through most interior design studios that carry Nina Campbell for O+L.

What happens if you remove those screws? I bet that window is just an insert and there has to be a way to remove the glass if it were damaged. I would take out those screws and see what happens. If the glass underneath is probably just one piece, and it probably is, you can buy window film which has a frosted appearance to cover the glass, then put the frame back on. You'll get the light, but no one can see in.

Ideas For Covering Window in Door? Good Questions
9/28/12 8:06 AM

This is really tough one!!! It appears that you have rather tall ceiling so shorter draperies on rods mounted above the window might actually be fine. What is throwing me is the proportion of the radiators to the window..the fact that they extend beyond the window is hard. I would maybe do drapery panels but only out as wide as the radiators to try and tie the entire thing together.

I don't disagree with the others in that roman shade might be really nice, but some nice sconces on either side of the window will help balance the whole composition...again the proportion is killing me here.
