I have a hard time with some of the articles - to me, using Williams Sonoma home is not an indicator of a "modest budget." That said - the point is inspiration right? Take some cues from things you love, ignore others...

I think maybe go ahead and paint, live with it for awhile, and see what comes to you. If you used the spare room as an office, it might actually be so useful to you eventually you can deal with its scallops!

I second cuminafterall! The built-ins are fabulous. I think you'll find that the color will function more like a neutral, so just do what you feel. If you get everything in your space and still don't like the color, ask to paint - I think most landlords are okay as long as you let them okay the colors first - that's what we've done with ours. Maybe just try to pick lighter colors (but not pastels...)

Question - for some reason, there is ALWAYS condensation on the top shelf of our fridge, any ideas as to the cause? It makes everything up there soggy :(

I think it's lovely. I think the similar color scheme throughout makes it feel more cohesive since it's such a large home. I would like to have seen more hallways and entrances to get a feel of the floor plan.

Really love the bathroom sinks! Fabulous! And the wall detail work in the guest room.
