let's be honest ... sugar is sugar is sugar ... which is something you can enjoy without feeling the need to healthy it up! i like the minimally processed cane sugar, but i have no illusions it's healthier because some trace mineral might be in it!

maybe if you make your own nut milk there is more protein because more of the pieces are left in it?

this is making me want to make some hot chocolate, but it always gives me a sore throat if i drink it before bed. love the cinnamon and spice ideas!! yum!

thanks everyone!!!
it is almost more of a cold drink than a soup. no meat or veg, just a salty, sweet, refreshing clear liquid that you throw a few chilis into. i'm going to look at all these links right now!

my family has a crazy sauce that i've seen being made and tasted but never tried it and don't know the exact proportions.
butter, tomato paste, tons of chopped garlic, and possibly water? simmer for a long time. it's thin so you eat it spooned over fresh raviolis that you spend lots of time rolling and cutting. mmm...

i guess it's one step better than drinking soda which people do and if they're trying to cut that out and finding it hard, this might be a good transition nicotine-patch-type product for them. i think it's weird too though.

my recent discovery are the gatorade powders. the drinks are full of high fructose corn syrup but gatorade is great when you're working out in the hot sun or playing an intense sport like hockey. the powders don't have hfcs - just the salt and the electrolytes and you can control the taste by only sprinkling in what you like or using a bigger bottle if you like it more watered down. genius! and way cheaper than bottled gatorade.

i use with canola oil since you can't taste the butter and it's a lot cheaper. I've also always used brown sugar since it's cheaper than maple syrup and honey.

get a peephole. my coworker mistakenly answered the door thinking it was a neighbor and it was a very scary guy (she was home alone and is tiny) pressuring her to buy something but kept trying to come in the house. his sales partner was in a van outside. she thought if i write a check will he go away. she wrote the check and then called the company. number not in service. she immediately cancelled the check and filed a police report. now the check is in collections and is affecting her credit score and everything. she has to do so much work to convince the collections agency and credit report companies that she is in the right. nightmare. that's why people aren't opening the door anymore unfortunately.

peepholes rule. get one!

boiled tap water even in places like thailand should be fine. also my new trick is something i learned from harold mcgee (look him up on new york times website) - you don't need a ton of water. just get a smaller pot and boil the pasta in it. it can overflow more easily so you have to watch it more but ... you save gas or electricity and time and the pasta tastes the same. so if you wanted to put it in the frig to use as soup broth starter it's not as much volume as the traditional style - maybe a quart or 2.

tuna and canned beans are pretty standard - you would eat them so they wouldn't go bad. canned foods last for years so worse case scenario you hold on to them for 5-6 years and throw them away - you are paying for peace of mind. my house is so small that my "pantry" (just one cupboard) and our stash of stuff we eat to get thru the day like trail mix and gatorade powders are already in the house. so as long as you're well stocked in the things you already eat that's about as good as it will get. if you're on your roof floating it doesn't matter how much crap you stored. you can't get it if you're trapped under a piece of your home either, right? so in the long run i think it doesn't really matter what you have because it most likely will be inaccessible.

that being said i always have PB, trail mix, and tuna on hand. as long as you're getting a little protein and fresh water you can deal with anything.

am going to fill up my 5 gallon water jugs tomorrow!

we changed from the tiny trader joe's natural version (peanuts only) to the whole foods version (peanuts + salt) just because it's bigger. my husband and son go through it so quickly. my pet peeve is mixing up the oil - it's so annoying and messy even though i try to be careful, but when i read the labels of the regular brands i cannot bring myself to feed my family palm oil and HFCS! so i mix away.

my friend said her fave peanut butter is whole foods honey roasted peanuts that you grind yourself but i'm sure it's $$$. but a worthy treat for those of you who like PB.

thanks everyone! i too like to eat "natural" but wanted to add some protein to his strawberry/banana/orange smoothie -don't think PB would work. I'll try cottage cheese and i've seen the vega brand at whole foods.

maybe i should just crack an egg into the smoothie?

i always had protein shakes as a kid at this "healthy shake" shop in Goleta, CA and they used the milk and egg and I like that taste. I don't like the newish kinds that are full of sugar and crap.
