Picked up a jar of fennel pollen a while back at Zingerman's. I've been using it a lot lately for fish en papillote. Lovely complement for fish, as well as chicken and pork. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | How To Use Fennel Pollen |

I'll second the Corningware Pop-Ins products. Great for taking leftovers to work if there is a refrigerator and microwave in your office. They are great for putting leftovers in or even baking directly in, cooling, refrigerating and reheating (i.e. baked macaroni & cheese, mini lasagna). Plus, they clean up very easily. Anne (in Reno)- A variation on SassySally's recommendation would be "soupy-rice" with miso soup. Akin to chinese congee...cooked rice plopped into miso soup (or oddly, lipton chicken noodle soup from the packet)...allow the rice to get overcooked/mushy...swirl in an egg at the end to get nice egg threads. A comfort food for me when I'm battling a cold, but good for sore teeth as well! Apartment Therapy - Escapes: Labor Day Meals |

After reading the comments here, I read the NY Times article carefully. I have to say, as far as I know, the rather classic Italian pasta dish that qualifies as "summer pasta" (according to my father who lived in Rome part of every year) was comprised strictly of olive oil, tomato, basil, and salt (though really it's heavily salted water for the pasta). He gets upset if I add garlic. I think Marcella Hazan lists a fresh tomato and basil option for her Aio e Oio "recipe" in Essentials of Italian Cooking. On that note, the NY Times article spells out the recipe under review: Heat Wave Eating: No-Cook Tomato Sauce |

For me, "green" in the kitchen has become trying to eat more local (participating in a CSA program), attempting to grow tomatoes and herbs at home - cultivating the soil to produce nutrient rich soil around my home, buying what I can in bulk to reduce packaging waste, and composting. Small steps, but ones I hope to be able to build on in the future. If every year I can add a few "saving" elements to my routine, I figure they are more likely to become mainstays of my life. This year I'm going to say tomatoes off the vine, since I am growing tomatoes for the first time! I have 8 heirloom varieties teasing me with their still small, green fruit...I'm crossing my fingers that I will succeed in this new endeavor! Survey: What's Your Quintessential Summer Food? |

I adore this cookbook and have not cooked from it as much as I would like. I have yet to make the roast chicken and bread salad for fear of setting of the smoke detectors in my house (which seem very sensitive)...maybe it's time to open up all the windows and try it out! MoM, I've had those hot dogs in Toronto and can see that you'd miss them! Though, in Montreal, there's always poutain! I've never had it, but it sounds disgustingly delicious. Open Thread #97 |

Are there any preventative measures a person can take to prevent bedbugs??? Though I do not live in NY, a friend will be passing through NY and staying in a hotel en route to coming to stay with me. What do I do? Hose him down before he walks through the door? Immediately wash all articles of clothing he has with him? Bedbugs Take Manhattan #4 |

I keep a bag of frozen artichoke hearts in the freezer at all times. I used to do jarred until I had a recipe that called for frozen. If you're not going with fresh, I'd definitely go w/ frozen (unless you're dealing w/ something where the oil that the jarred ones come in can be used, or the marinated flavor is desired). I've found that the frozen do well straight out of the bag -still frozen- in pasta sauces, stews, and even roasts, thawing during the cooking process. I have yet to try them in cold salads but that may be just the thing to make this week...artichoke orzo salad? Tip: Frozen Artichokes |

I'd definitely see if you can exchange it for another one, wherever you bought it. I got mine at Williams-Sonoma, and with their generous return policy, know they'd just replace it. Mandoline Update |

I second the magnetic strip. No mess, no fuss....don't have to worry about bacteria forming in the block. It's good to be a bit careful putting it on and off the strip though...you can mess up your knife edge. A very good space saver when short on drawers and counter space though. Open Thread #94 |

I tend to pick up, rinse, and carry on...but obviously that applies only to rinsable foods. If, say, a bit of chopped up canned tomato falls on the floor, the dog gets it. Sometimes I just feel like being nice to the dog though...pups love their carrots! The Five Second Rule: Food on the Floor |
