It's really nice, but seems like a bit much for kids who will only enjoy it for a few more years. Sprinkler, slip-n-slide, kiddie pool -- kids still enjoy simple things.

It's interesting and combines my two favorite things: books and bikes. However, I'd still rather use a cycloc or just a wall-mounted hook... and for less than $3600, I could just put a bookcase next to it.

Schoolhouse Electric schoolhouseelectric.com
sells vintage-styled shades. The least expensive ones are around $20-$30. It might be a lot to spend for a rental depending on how many fixtures you have. I would use clip shades and less expensive fixes in my personal spaces... and maybe spring for the more expensive shades for the spaces where I entertain guests.

As an apartment dweller, I love Purex 3-in-1. They're sheets with detergent, fabric softener and anti-static in one.

I don't have to worry about getting to the basement and realizing I've forgotten one or the other. I especially like that there aren't any spills or wasted detergent/fabric softener.

Yeah.. I was trying to be nice. I'd shell out the extra $150 for the steelwood chairs. Although I still think Grcic's chair would be good for a kitchen table that becomes a 'kids' table for holiday meals.

At first glance, this chair reminded me of the Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec Steelwood chair (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/seating-dining-sidechairs/steelwood-chair-by-ronan-erwan-bouroullec-044791) The colors and the price are nice differences. I think the cylindrical legs and wood construction make Grcic's chair warmer and more playful. I think it would be a good alternative to the Steelwood chair for the family-oriented types or those who aren't keen on the industrial details of the Steelwood chair.

First, remove the mantle.

Second, I think you should face it with a light stone or marble tiles in a larger size. It should be something polished to reflect the incoming light and disperse it throughout the room. Flat... Shiny... Grid.... very Modern.

It may seem like more of an expense than you want right now, but it's an investment in your home and should add to the value. It might be tough to live with the brick for a while (maybe you could whitewash it in the meantime?), but get some samples and take your time to make a decision and save up a little.

You can buy some decent tiles for around $5-$10 per square foot and save some money by setting them yourself, but I would recommend doing your research first because tiles can fall off and break unexpectedly if they are not set properly.

I wouldn't use it in a bathroom - I couldn't imagine brushing my teeth with that water. It seems more like a fountain for a solarium or conservatory or space that's not usually part of the apartment living. Something I would maybe expect to see in Architectural Digest in someone's 8th bathroom that's beautiful, but never ever used.

I have a mini-dachshund - about 15lbs., but he has a bark like a German Shepherd. Anyone on the other side of a door is none the wiser.

He's also really protective. He's been known to go nuts (barking and snarling) on the boyfriend when he gets out of bed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and tries to get back in bed quietly.

In any case, a barking dog has been shown to be a better deterrent to burglary than an alarm system.

Boot Scrapers - very necessary for 19th century homes - think horse and carriage transportation and the misfortune of stepping in horse manure. Streets tended to collect mud and filth, too.
I live in Upstate New York in a late 19th century Victorian home converted into small lofts - but there's still a marble hitching post for horses in front of the house.

If you have any connections in Memphis, TN or a couple other places in the U.S. - the table might still be available at the Pottery Barn Outlet store. There are often leftovers from previous seasons for less than half retail.

Otherwise, it doesn't seem like it would be difficult to build.

...I only suggest the slipcover because upholstering a curved piece of furniture is more difficult than one with nice 90degree angles, especially for a beginner.

I like the Roman shades idea, too, but if you want curtains...

Ikea's Kvartal system has ceiling mounts and even a curved track for the corner. The only drawback might be that it has minumum dimensions to fit the track system
OR, try West Elm's steel cable system mounted at the sides of the windows and feed the cable through 2 round screw hooks installed at the corner.

Practically, I think shades might be the best option since that looks like a radiator under the right window.

There are plenty of knock-off Bertoia chairs and stools. These are at Advanced Interiors, and they cost less than costco's.
