Plain black loose leaf is my favorite, followed closely by ginger tea. A restaurant in town makes the best ginger tea. They brew fresh ginger with apples and prunes for hours. It's perfectly spicy and sweet.

On Christmas eve, my family makes corned beef sandwiches. My grandmother used to actually make the corned beef from scratch, but she's gotten a bit too old for that sort of thing. Now we buy a bunch from the deli, a couple of loaves of bread and all the fixings, and everone makes their own sandwiches. It's very laid back, and everyone just spends the evening enjoying each others company instead of making food. It's definately doable for a large crowd, and no cooking for you!

I'm all for the stew or soup idea. That's easy in large quantities, and gets better if it's been in the fridge over night anyway. And if you buy the bread and make a large salad, you don't have to do much cooking beyond the soup. If there are any kids who are picky eaters, keep some of those individual bagel pizzas in the freezer. If they refuse the soup, they'll probably eat them and you won't have to cook them.

Also, Trader Joes is your friend.

Toast w/ butter and honey, and tea. I eat a sort of second breakfast as I'm leaving the house of warm milk and molasses. Most people think it's an odd combo, but I have to tell you that it's delicious, and healthy, too, especially if you use blackstrap.

I live alone and often cook a small, quick meal for one. This is handy, and means I don't have to wash a big pan every-night. I'd still want a big skillet for making full meals, but I could see using this daily for one-person meals. An omelette pan also does the trick, too.

In my dorm I had a hot-pot, and you can do a lot with a hot pot. You can make ramen, and just about any asian noodle based soup as they cook really quickly and don't really need to be boiled. Also good for having around to make tea and coffee. I'd get a hot-pot, as they're relatively cheap, and having a way to make hot water will greatly increase your options.

Good question about whether it's a toaster oven or regular toaster. If it's a toaster oven, you're set. If regular, that could be a bit harder. If it's a regular toaster, you might want to try experimenting with small pasties. Sort of like hot-pockets, but home-made. You'd probably have to make them really thin to get in the toaster, but I could see this working pretty well if you thought it through. I've never done it, but if you perhaps par-baked them and then froze them before going up to the house, you'd have a bag of read-to-toast meals.

I like the idea of flipping the living and dining areas. Could work, unless the dining area is next to the kitchen and you like it that way. If you keep everything in the long room, I would get a shorter unit as suggested perviously, and get it in white. Then put some artwork above it, I think that will make it dominate the room less. My mom has a small room similar to this, and she had white built-in made for one wall, and it had the effect of making the room bigger.

It's pretty hard to wrest the Vernor's from my hand, but being the ginger ale nut that I am, this sounds like fun!

I heard on NPR that the best method for washing is to spray a 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water and then rinse. this is great for fruits like apples. It gets a little more complex for things like lettuces, but then I suppose you'd be dressing the salad eventually, so you could rinse them in a tub of 1:1 vingar solution, and then rinse, and if some stayed on, it would probably be masked by the dressing.

I would find a way to move the computer from the foot of the bed. That would make me antsy to have the office essentially in the bedroom. Maybe switch where you have the drawers and the desk? Not sure if it's possible space-wise. I also like the office armoire suggestion, but not sure if you have the space between the foot of the bed and wall to make it functional. Also, how big is the kitchenette? IKEA has some cool tables that fold one leaf against the wall, and you can leave the other out for eating, and then fold it down when you are done. You'd also have the option of pulling out the full table if you ever have people over for dinner. This might let you take the dining table out of the living space and give you some room for shifting stuff around.

Detroit Eastern Market goers should have a meet-up sometime and share our finds! Maybe breakfast at russell street if it's only a few.

Dawn. I like the scent, and it sudses up well. I'm rather proud to say the bottle I bought when I moved into my apartment this time last year is the same one I'm using today. I have a bottle of all-natural, environmentally friendly stuff waiting under the sink. It's Lavender scented, which I love the scent of lavender, but I'm not sure if I'll like it for the dishes. Dawn has such a lovely, soapy smell.

I'm pretty lucky. My neighbors are all really quiet and polite about noise. I do have some neighbors accross the way who fight pretty loudly and often, but I've never really been bothered by it as it's kind of a Soap Opera I can keep track of. I only recently figured out which neighbors they were when I saw them fighting in front of their car. I suppose that makes me something of a eavesdropper...

Vinegar is top on my list, use it all the time. I also make my own general cleaner that is super awesome at hitting the tough, greasy messes. I fill a standard spray bottle (like what you would have for 409) with 8 oz. rubbing alcohol, 3 TBS ammonia (I just eyeball it. No need to be exact, but if you overdo it too much the ammonia will overpower you each time you spray), and fill to the top with water. Gets greasy fingerprints off just about anything, cleans random smudges on my cheap apartment carpet pretty well, and gets the post-cooking stove mess off in no-time. And so cheap, too!

I do love scrubbing bubbles. I feel guilty each time I use it, all those chemicals, but gosh does it clean my shower better than anything out there.

What on earth is nutritional yeast? I've never heard of it before.

I like mine with salt, and if I'm feeling indulgent, butter. I also like it with parmesean cheese, and the curry powder idea sounds delish. I'll have to try that tonight for movies! Oh, and I always take my own bag to the movie theater. Both because I'm cheap, and I can't stand the smell of the fake butter. I have my special movie purse which is bigger than my usual one and fits a brown bag of popcorn.

I had a concoction of white beans with garlic, onion, herbs from the garden, and I stopped at the farmers market on the way to work and tossed in some fresh tomatoes when I nuked it. To accompany it, there's a place that sells day-old very good bread, so I bought some of that. I'll make some grilled cheese with the bread tonight, and maybe bread pudding if it starts to go stale tomorrow.

I always thought that Detroit water was all right, at least better than the El Paso water I grew up with, but I was very surprised when I installed the filter to learn that Detroit water smells. I always sensed the off smell in my dish rags, but assumed it was because they were sitting around too long, but apparently it was the water. While installing the filter, I noticed the smell, and then went to the bathroom to see if the water smelled there too, and it did! The filter did get rid of the smell. I would have mentioned that in the review, but I only had 200 words.
