on a sidenote, i hope people here are not assuming that the size of a person's book collection shows how much the person reads? i'm an avid reader, but i take out all of my books from the library. the books i own are all textbooks, reference books, and a few books that people have bought me as gifts b/c they know i like to read.

personally, i never read a book twice, except for a few exceptional ones. they take up a lot of space and are extremely heavy when one is moving. i also don't see the point in spending money on something that i will only read once.

if this was about clothes... say, if i only wore an item ONCE, it would go right out the door, straight to the salvation army. books are no different to me.

i want to also chime in that i have the petrie sofa and i live in a one bedroom. honestly - when i have one guest over, that one person can sleep very comfortably on the sofa! i also have the ottoman, so i push that against the sofa if he/she wants to stretch his/her arm/leg out.

i also don't know if splurging on aerobed is worth it for me since i rarely have more than 1

i have def gotten bit by bedbugs in hotels. the last place i remember getting bitten was at a westin - which goes to show that name brand hotels don't necessarily protect you from bedbugs!

you can tell that you got bit by bedbugs when you seem to have a pattern of bites that go up your legs or your body (ex, like ankles> thighs> stomach> arms).

in addition to not putting your suitcase near the bed, i also try not to put my clothes in the hotel room's drawers. i live out of my suitcase and all of my used laundry i put in a plastic bag and then in my suitcase. i immediately wash all the clothes i brought on the trip with me when i get home, used or not.

on the flipside, my girlfriend is a consultant and lives in hotels and out of her suitcase. for the last 6 years she's been doing this and has never once had experienced bedbugs. so, don't feel like it's a given just b/c you stay at hotels!

oh, i'm so relieved to hear i'm not the only one that has the SAME, EXACT closet!

we've also thought about adding shelves to the side, but our closet is so narrow, it would make it difficult to reach things in the back if we add to the sides.

we're keeping the 2 poles, one right behind the other, like in your picture. but, we're also sticking an old dresser that we no longer use against the back wall. we plan to store seasonal clothing and accessories.

we also have 2 shelves on top of the back pole. we store things like bags, blankets, things we don't need regularly.

as for shoes, i use one of those long shoe hangers that have slots for about 8 pairs of shoes. my only problem is my large collection of boots - they are just sitting on the floor of my closet, wasting valuable space... sigh.
