We used Ikea all over our place. Our entire kitchen is Ikea, but we mixed it carefully and knew when to stop. We also altered surfaces that were the least expensive at ikea to get the look we wanted.

do i ever feel your pain... we have had boxers all our life and love them dearly, but the clean up is a pain. we have found a happy medium and here is what we suggest:

- buy all leather furniture if the dogs are allowed on it. we have a couch the dogs are allowed on, and it is leather. you can wipe it off quickly. buy a good quality leather, we had american leather, the couch lasted 10 years.

- any throw pillows/couch blankets, i buy stuff that is washable.

- i buy duvets for the bed that can easily be changed out and washed. so far pottery barn is the most durable. visit an outlet is you live near one, the prices are great.

- we just sweep up like it is part of our routine. do the dishes, do a 5 minute sweep. we have a dyson and love it as well.

- our first boxer ate grocery store food, and shed a ton. our second boxer has a sensitive tummy/allergies and has to be raw fed. but he barely sheds. i often wonder if and how diet plays in to shedding.

- i see a lady at the dog park brush her dog, outside the gate for 5 minutes before they leave. good idea. i bet that helps a lot if you have a dog with longer hair.

- i noticed some brand of dog beds pick up the dog smell, the dog beds from hunting or outdoor places seem to not hold the smell, although i love the cotton foo-foo ones at the fancy dog store. one thing we bought our dog as a lambs skin (like they sell at ikea) and he LOVES it. they are washable, but it never picks up the dog smell, i only wash them 2-3 times a year. i don't know why they don't pick up dog smell, it is amazing.

good luck, that's a big dog you have.

Cleaning up after yourself is fine, doing dishes, etc.

Cleaning up their stuff is creepy.

Once we had a dog sitter wax our floors. I was like ewww, I hate waxed, slick floors. It was creepy.

we are having an open studio party. my husband is a photographer and we have a live/work space. so we are having our friends and his clients over to kick off the new space (we moved in 6 months ago).

this weekend we finally saw it all come together and it was 'finished'. pretty exciting. well, other than the tv almost falling off the new wall mount... excitement of the wrong sort.

we will post some more pictures to flickr soon.

sheet source: I LOVE nice sheets but can't think about paying a lot because we have a dog that believes our bed is his. he has been known to turn down the bed before, like a person.

pottery barn outlet. i have bought their linen duvets for $40 before. they have some great deals.

urban outfitters has some coverlets (nice for summer) that are $30 or less. we have a few of them and they are great.

i love marshalls too. i always find nice imported sets for $80 or so that retail for $300 .

i bought a slipper chair from them and was really unhappy with the construction. the wood frame ended up poking through the fabric. it was not a heavily used piece either, so can't imagine a sofa from them holding up. i ended up giving the chair to my mom cause i didn't want to deal with it.

it was an expensive chair we purchased form ABC. hope the quality has improved. sorry to be negative nancy but it is a lot of money for one of their items.

this week is extremely hard for us. we are doing a combination of the whole apt and one room. our bathroom is just plain old depressing. it was the only thing we really hate about our apartment. during the course of this cure, the water heater has broken (mini one fixed above the sink), then the shower started leaking and currently we are waiting on the landlord to tell us how and if he will fix it. we live in a live/work building with a commercial lease, so what the landlord will fix is always up in the air. on the plus side we can do whatever we want in the space. we have removed all stuff from the bathroom because of the leaks, and are in a holding pattern until we hear from the landlord.

so we will focus on lighting and see what we can get up and running! we have a few ideas in addition to our crazy DYI light fixture. more to come.

we are cranky too!!! we have been putting off projects because we have people over all the time and our place was in a such as disaster mode all the time we had to hold off. we have company this saturday night and that is it so we are trying to get all painting done tonight and tomorrow during the day.

we have given up on color and are painting the living room black. no kidding.

@ hunted - i totally understand about the post painting fear of putting anything in the wall. i tell my husband to do it then i turn and don't look.

I made them myself. The prints at B&J Fabrics in NYC are amazing. Simple cotton, and they have tons of great graphic prints. I made simple pinch pleated curtains myself and bought the rods and circle slider thingies from restoration hardware. plus my windows are very long, so i would have paid an arm and a leg if i bought them.

i am inspired to make those slim cushions for our floor. we wanted some floor cushions, but need them to be washable because i am sure our dog will use the floor cushions more than us. just trying to be realistic. ;)
