A kitchen sink, even if it is not being used to wash dogs, is SIX THOUSAND TIMES more contaminated than the average toilet. It's frequently cited as being the dirtiest thing in the house. The sink is going to be crawling with bacteria no matter what, so who cares if a dog is occasionally washed in it? I wash my dogs in the bathtub, or outdoors when it's warm enough, but I still will not let food or clean utensils come in contact with the kitchen sink. 5 in 15: Five Spring Cleaning Chores To Conquer in Fifteen Minutes |

People are always raving about cauliflower crust on the MyFitnessPal forums, but their recipes use a lot of cheese to bind it together. Not exactly healthy! It's nice to see a version that accomplishes the same thing without the cheese, as I'd feel more comfortable consuming a nut-based fat. Since I can safely eat gluten I think I'd still prefer traditional crust, but maybe I'll try this someday. Look! Cauliflower Pizza Crust |

Weighing ingedients (or eyeballing measurements when possible) is faster than measuring them out by volume. I'm also convinced that setting up a mise en place before you start cooking helps speed up the overall process. A pressure cooker saves a lot of time when cooking rice and beans, and the toaster oven preheats a lot faster than the oven if you're baking a small quantity of something. I was so enchanted with this idea that I picked up the ingredients on my way home last night. They turned out so well! It was tempting to add things to the potato mixture, but I'm glad I kept it pure. The cakes are enormous (I could only eat half of one) and by my calculations only 230 calories each. I did not make the creme fraiche sauce but served them with fennel apple salad and some steamed asparagus with miso butter. My girlfriend actually didn't like them initially-- she's been a pescetarian for most of her life and was weirded out by how "meaty" they are. For some reason the salmon tastes a lot more like bacon than like lox in this context. I loved them though. Recipe: Smoked Salmon Potato Cakes with Herb Crème Fraîche Recipes from The Kitchn |

I have a car and a big fridge but I do European-style shopping. I'm lucky, though, in the fact that I have a historic market selling high-quality meats, seafood, dairy, and produce just one block away. On Saturday and Sunday there's a farmer's line right outside the market. There's also a nice organic grocery and an olive oil/vinegar shop two blocks away from my house. And two big grocery stores and a couple of good bakeries that I can get to on easily my walk home from work. I always carry a few reusable bags with me in case I think of something that I need to pick up-- although that's gotten me in trouble when I accidentally bought more than I could comfortably carry! We always give our master bedroom to guests. The second bedroom is really tiny, so there is no place they could put their suitcases. The living room couches are ok for the casual overnight guest, but again there's nowhere to set up shop with a suitcase or two. The living room is also inconvenient because you have to climb a flight of steep stairs to get to the full bath. I'd rather let people be close to the shower and have room to spread out their stuff. Especially since non-city dwellers might not be accustomed to a teeny tiny bedroom. Real Life Advice: Hosting Guests Without a Guestroom |

I actually do count calories-- it's the only way I've ever been able to lose weight. Of course, there are a lot of wrong ways to go about it, but if you're a fairly clean eater to begin with it's a good way to make sure you're getting the correct number of calories. Soups, stir fries, hearty salads, and egg-based dishes (like fritatas and omelets) are all great low-carb vehicles for vegetables. If you're ok with carbs you could also incorporate rice, tortillas, beans, or lentils into the meal. One recipe that I love is slices of eggplant baked with chickpeas in a cinnamon-tomato sauce.
