It's too cold and industrial-looking for me!

Did you get the table in the cocktail lounge from India? Looks a lot like a few we brought back from there.

One thing these dinner party guides is missing is how to find dinner party guests! People love my cooking, but are either apathetic about a dinner party or don't take it seriously (e.g. cancelling at the last minute, showing up really late, not eating anything because they had dinner already, etc). I wonder if it's a geographic thing-- the culture in Washington, DC is more of drinking and dining out than dinners at people's homes-- or if I just don't know the right people.

The marina down the street from me does a houseboats tour every fall. It's so interesting to see how people manage to live in such small spaces!

Most people with desk jobs shouldn't even be eating 2000 calories a day. For a small woman like me it's around 1400 to maintain my current weight. I log my calories to keep them under control, but it's not hard as long as I mostly stick to home-cooked food and reasonable portion sizes.

It sounds like a fun party, but these aren't tips that can be carried over to most people's dinner parties (I know I don't have a wall I can write on, a table that needs assembly, or traditions to share).

For those that use cheesecloth, how do you keep the quinoa from sticking to it? Or are you sitting there like me picking off all the little quinoa grains that stuck? I've been avoiding quinoa because I don't want to buy a finer mesh strainer and the cheesecloth method is such a pain.

The latest Smitten Kitchen recipe (a chickpea and lentil salad) has them as an optional ingredient. I still haven't gotten myself a jar but I can see how they would go really well with the spices and tahini in the salad.

I spent about 60% of my net income on housing expenses (before refinancing it was more like 70%). But I put at least $500 a month into savings, and 10% of my income into a 401k, and I take a couple vacations every year and own a car... so it seems like I'm doing ok.

I have a good job but 30% of my take-home pay would get me either a tiny room in a group house, a studio in a dangerous neighborhood, or maybe a 1-bedroom with a 2 or 3-hour commute. I tried all three of those things when I was renting, and while it did save me some money I'm not sure it was worth the decrease in quality of life.

It happens sometimes. Last night I made sweet potato, zucchini, and corn tacos in 20 minutes (including cleanup). The corn was frozen but nothing else was prepped ahead of time. Actually, I didn't even come up with the meal until I was on my way home from work!

I'm with Charlotte-- I can't explain why, but the serving style looks unappetizing to me. It also seems like the polenta would get cold very quickly, and that the board would be a major pain to clean. I like the polenta idea but would serve it in big bowls instead.

You can freeze apples? I've unintentionally frozen apples in the fridge and it completely ruins the texture. Maybe if you're using them for baking?

This is very timely, as I just made the ethereally smooth hummus for the second time. I do think the peeling of the chickpeas makes a difference. Really, if you're going to be cooking dried beans and getting out the food processor it's already a bit of a project, so the peeling isn't really a big deal.

This is a good list. Tuna used to be more of a staple in my home but I actually haven't used it in months. Still, it's a nice cheap source of protein, and it also make a good emergency dog or cat food when you run out.

The only one I might disagree with are the bananas. I like having them around sometimes, but you have to use them pretty quickly and they're not the most versatile thing in the world.

For those of us that can't tolerate lactose, does chocolate almond milk work just as well? My favorite post-workout snack is a smoothie made with almond milk, cocoa powder, banana, and whey powder, which is like a combination of #1, #2, and #5.

Also, when's the best time to have the post-workout snack? Immediately after, or should I wait an hour?

I think it's bizarre that so many commenters are claiming that Trader Joe's is cheap. My girlfriend wanted to get a couple items there a few weeks ago, and I decided to just do my entire grocery shopping there rather than go to another store. The bill ended up being $150, about twice what I'd normally spend for a week. I couldn't believe it. That place is a total rip-off.
