I love it - but as the parent of a messy 17 year old we have comprised - he just keeps his door closed and I don't worry about what his room looks like ;)

Good advice. I got back Sunday after a long weekend and my suitcase is still sitting open on the floor of my closet - still not unpacked! But, I have washed the dirty stuff. I use hotel laundry bags to store worn items - which makes it a since to pull them out of the case and in to the wash. Now to do the ironing ....

Lovely room :) Great suggestions from everyone. My son drew with blue pen all over my cream chair so I would suggest colourful (washable) throws or slip covers. I would also get rid of the bottle (or is it a vase?) off the side table - if it can be knocked off it will be! A colourful wooden toy box and trad wooden toys can also be very decorative.

All closets look great when they are empty! Best tip I got is to recycle one item whenever you buy a new one.

I would have to add Pesto - can't live without it! Red or green - pesto + pasta is a meal from cupboard basics.

Knife racks, a special storage block or lined drawer, are all good. The key thing is to keep a sharp edge, so you don't want knifes loose in a drawer, where they will bang against each other when you open and close it.

In the last few years I've bought something to wear, usually a scarf or earrings. Every time I wear the scarf I bought in Sardinia I remember happy times :)

These are really for socks, and small items. I have two and they work a treat. However, for a jumper you're really better off drying them flat on a drying rack specifically for sweaters - I used to have a rack that fitted over the bath tub, but must admit I get fed up waiting for items to dry this way so I reshape knits when damp and then hang on non-slip hangers to dry.

Great advice from all. One more tip - make sure your nearest and dearest know your wish list - I am sure they would be glad to know what to buy you for birthdays, etc. Just buy what you can afford now and save your cash for good quality, fresh, produce. Buy fresh herbs, not copper pans.

I think this is an Ikea kitchen. Love the clean lines and open space at the bottom of cabinets.

My resolution is to not start that sexy new project until I've finished the current job.

Love buy 1, throw out 2! I've been buying one, throwing out one for a long time and it really helps control clutter.

If your in-laws haven't already realised you don't want this stuff I don't think there is anyway you can tell them without hurting their feelings. I think I have a solution - buy a shed and create a 'man cave'/play area furnished exclusively with firefighter stuff and any other collectables they give you (with the proviso that items are child safe). That way you have a clear house, your kids get a play house, there is somewhere to store the fire fighter's stuff - happy kids, happy in-laws. My Gran had a 'summer house' and it was stuffed with the junk she couldn't fit in her house - I LOVED it as a kid. Shed's rock :)

On an 'adventure' management course I ended up sleeping (with permission) in a hay barn and had a very warm and comfortable night's sleep. Hay has a great smell - so I would give this a try for a night - as long as the hay is fresh.

Do schedule some time for Fort Worth. Don't miss Louis Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum - right opposite the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth. Camp Bowie Blvd also has a few neat shops. Montgomery Street Antique Mall might also be worth a visit - there are lots of different sellers under one roof - it's more 'vintage' than 'antique' - it's also close to the museum's, so easy to pop in. Don't miss Sundance Square - enjoy a beer in 'The Flying Saucer' bar and pop into Leddy's Ranch at Sundance for boots and up market western wear. Reata roof top restaurant would be my choice for lunch (although the food at the Kimbell is also fantastic).
Other tips for Dallas - Sam Moon is worth a visit to stock up on silver jewellery for presents - it's a huge outlet type shop selling lots of accessories and bags. For cool shops, bars and restaurants, check out the Deep Ellum district.

Contact all your relatives before your next birthday and say that you've decided you're lucky to have so much, and in the current economic climate please can people make contributions to charity, or give you a gift that takes up no space (trip to spa, theatre tickets, etc.)

With stuff you've already got you will probably develop my clumsy habits and 'accidentally' break things (in reality give it to Good Will). Don't go overboard on saying how upset you are though - as they'll buy you another one!

I think your rug would look fab as a wall-hanging above your sofa.

My brother bought me a very pretty, too small rug - which is now a wall-hanging above my bed. Sew a channel of fabric on the back (I used linen thread as it's so strong), then run a dowel rod through it. Add a couple of hooks to the wall, and hang up your rug.

Other ideas are to use it as a throw on your sofa, or add a heavy cotton backing and stuff to make a huge floor pillow.

You have a wonderful new wall hanging! It would look fab behind the sofa! My brother bought me a too small carpet runner from Pakistan, so I sewed a channel of fabric on the back, ran a dowel rod through the fabric and put two hooks on the wall to hand the dowel in. It now hangs above my bed and looks great.

Another idea, would be to have it over the back of the sofa as a sort of throw. Or why not buy some heavy cotton, lots of stuffing and make a huge floor pillow!

When you buy your next rug try and go bigger than you think you need, so that the rug 'connects' the furniture on the room and goes under your sofa.

Lovely rug / wall hanging :)
