What a great selection of carts. I don't know what it is but I have a weakness for furniture on casters. We even designed our platform bed around huge red casters.

Have you seen the Demco library book carts? Such a drool-worthy selection of colors!

Storage Where You Need It:
Rolling Utility Carts

As others have mentioned, the January Cure was a great motivator even if I was unable to follow every task to the letter. My family will continue to use the Cure to keep up with our projects.

We donated many items, I removed the loathsome stair carpet, floors gut scrubbed, drawers are tidier. The process wasn't pretty but the results are satisfying. I'm surprised by how satisfying it is to clean areas that NOBODY sees. My mother-in-law is never going to look under the cast iron radiators but I love knowing that we dug out a year's worth of cat hair, modeling clay, shells and Lego bits.

One of the best and hardest parts of the Cure was writing the complete project list for the house and garden. We stored our list in Cozi along with relevant dimensions for various projects. It might take us a couple years to tackle everything but just knowing what we want to do is half the battle!

Day 19: Catch Up & Take a Photo Apartment Therapy January Cure

I like this room. For me, gender is less an issue than age flexibility. The designer/family made good choices that will last for many years. The wallpaper is delightful (when I saw it, I thought, "Want") and the bureau is a piece to keep forever.

Our son's changing pad was on his bureau and the shelves above held the cleaning supplies. (A separate piece of furniture devoted to changing didn't make sense for our small house.)

In the end, it makes sense to invest in good pieces that will last a long time. The chair in my eight-year-old's room was mine when I was five.

Thanks for Poppin links! What a great resource! I love that you can shop by color. Look who's getting an orange stapler ...

Yay. Finally a task we're already managing well. I used today's assignment to post January's digital photos to Shutterfly and my backup hard drive.

I'm still sorting out books and miscellaneous flotsam in our master bedroom. Our "office" is in the bedroom so clearing the clutter really improves the whole space.

I've also become a fresh flower convert. Who knew a little bouquet of hot pink carnations could be so joyful?

I've got a mountain of laundry to fold tonight, which I usually do to Netflix. I'll make David Bowie my laundry companion.

After dinner, it would be lovely to squeeze in some ice skating with our eight-year-old.

I'm sharing this assignment with my mom. While visiting her for Christmas, she gave me five or so watercolors to frame for her. I'm grateful for this assignment because it prevented my usual procrastination.

I looked through my portfolio and found pictures I've been hoarding for 12-15 years. I still need to choose one but at least I'm moving forward with Mom's pictures!

It's wonderful working with a good professional framer. I'm a designer but I'm in awe our framer. I swear that John can detect dozens of shades of white. He knows my tastes are modern but I trust him when he says a more ornate frame is appropriate.

Day 3: Weekend Chores - Flowers, Floors, Green Cleaners & Outbox Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/5/13 11:41 PM

Mr. erikakn and I scrubbed kitchen, dining room, and bathroom floors. Pulled out fridge and scrubbed behind that too. (Reunited missing Lego bits with the rest of our son's toys.)

Husband found Mrs. Meyer's Lemon Verbena cleaner a bit overwhelming. Perhaps he used too much in the mop water? He'd eyeballed it instead of measuring.

Took down the Christmas tree and, while putting ornaments away, finally got rid of bunch of empty boxes we were hoarding in the attic. (Why on earth was did I keep a box for a pizza stone we've had for two years? Sheesh.)

Thrilled to finally tear out the fugly staircase runner I've hated since we bought the house 12 years ago! (We were keeping it for our young son and geriatric dog.) I've been dreaming of painting our stairs for years and think that could be one of the Fun Projects for 2013. Inspiration includes Horst Gläsker's Scala stairs (AT); Love Mother's yellow painted runner; and, from Houzz, these painted risers: here and .

Who knew grocery store flowers could be so sweet? I usually get cut flowers twice a year, on my b-day and Mother's Day so it's a treat to have flowers "just because."

All in all, it was a lovely, bright winter day. We cleaned and still made time for good food and some sledding.

Kate,

Thanks for the heads up regarding Norwex. I'll check out the site tonight. Am also scanning walls for more vertical storage!

Moving to greener products or just water and microfiber requires undoing decades of brainwashing. You know - cleansers have to stink and bubble to prove that they're working.

Looked under beds and sofa in preparation for tomorrow's Big Clean. Yes, there are dust bunnies but they're very small. Yay?

One of the best presents I ever received was a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner. Sure it was a gift for the "house" but we bought it on Mother's Day and I'm the vacuumer of the house hold. Maybe it's an exaggeration to say vacuuming is a joy but I do kind of love it.

AUSTRALIAN NATURAL CLEANING GURU
Last year I caught a couple seasons of Lush House on Hulu. Shannon Lush is an Australian cleaning/organizing/life-improvement guru and she's deeply committed to diy natural cleansers. The January Cure is inspiring me to finally pull together a version of Shannon's Cleaning Kit. She also has video clips demonstrating how to use the kit. (Everybody needs a shoe fru, right?)

QUESTIONS: NEED TIPS/IDEAS FOR KEEPING FLOORS GRIT FREE
We've been trying to be a no-shoes household with mixed success. We don't have a real mudroom but we do have floor mats. Our ancient pit bull crossed the rainbow bridge in September so the house is considerably cleaner now but that leaves three humans dragging in grit ...

1) Floor mats: Can you suggest alternatives to the American Floor Mat? We currently use these commercial grade mats and they're super for keeping mud/snow in check but they're nearly impossible for residential vacuums to keep clean. And dog hair remains stuck in the deep crevices.

2) Shoes: How can we corral shoes when we don't really have much floor space?

3) Mops: I hate the conventional disposable mop heads. Are there any washable types? I bought microfiber covers for my mom's Swiffer and they work really well. My husband prefers mopping so I'm looking for a washable mop head.

Shiny floors here I come!

This PDF gives a broad overview of the January 2013 Cure. It doesn't solve the late email issue but it's helpful as a sneak preview for upcoming tasks.

We donate twice a month to Goodwill or St. Vincent's--a habit I picked up from a previous Cure. Our problem is that we're not consistent about the location of our "box."

Thank you for this.

Day 2: Set Up Your Outbox Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/3/13 4:06 PM

I want to see @Haironfire1026's cat room.

I love the taking the Cures; the results are surprisingly long-lived. Our last Kitchen Cure was absolutely transformative and I hardly bought a thing.

As I write my list for 2013, I've found more than a few projects I've been needing to tackle for years. I also have a tendency to stop halfway. For eg. I finally installed a ceiling-mounted curtain track above our front door six months ago but I have'nt made the winterizing curtain yet. I hung a floating cabinet in the entry way a year ago but I'm still using painter's tape for "knobs."

This year I'm wring my list in Cozi so that I can look at it anytime, anywhere. Good luck everyone!

Day 1: Make a List of Projects Apartment Therapy January Cure

Thank you for this recipe--you simply can't have enough gingerbread/cookie recipes. Is it pointless to list "serving size" for a cookie like this?

I'll test it with coconut oil as a substitute for shortening; Sara the Healthy Home Economist swears by it.

What a refreshing update! I swear, white paint is magical.

And I really love the rope typography. (As a web designer, I have a secret hankering to use a goofy rope typeface at work but that just doesn't work in a world of Gotham and Futura.)
