I grew up eating big plates of sinangag with over easy eggs, pickled jalapenos, and patis! My absolute favorite, and like Marot and her dad, it was the very first thing I learned to cook for myself as a kid.

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend pairing it with a sunny-side up or over-easy egg right on top, then break the yolk and mix it into the rice. I grew up thinking sinangag specifically meant rice with over easy eggs. It's honestly the best--the yolk coats the garlicky rice in a delicious and rich sauce, and the pickled jalapenos add acid and spice to balance the flavors. The patis (fish sauce) adds salt and is better than soy sauce IMO.

Yeah, as soon as I saw the almond shaped seeds I knew they were loquats. I'm not sure if they actually grow in the Philippines, but my Filipina grandmother had five or six trees in her backyard and we always called them loquat. I loved eating them so much as a kid, especially the sweeter white variety. Mmm. Loquat jam is very good also, if you ever find yourself with a loquat abundance.

I don't care for the look of this either. If I was looking to do something sort of similar I might turn to Plasti-drip a la this blog: http://cubicle57.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/challenge-this-pinterest/ where she recreated mugs she saw on pinterest using Plasti Drip.

Still not sure about the food safety, and probably not dishwasher safe either.

This room is stunning!

It's great to see friends showing support in the comments! I find it funny though that they sound a bit like Yelp reviews. Not a criticism at all, just a funny observation.

This is hilarious...but terrifying.

5. Cover pasta with microwave-safe plastic wrap. Heat in a microwave oven on full power (100%) until pasta is hot, about 5 minutes. Uncover and fill with beef stroganoff.

Mmmm pasta cake wrapped in plastic wrap and hiated until piping hot...then filled with beef stroganoff...

Thanks so much everyone for your answers, I have some really great ideas now!
mschatelaine, thanks for your wonderful, thorough response! While the thought of spending up to a grand on bedding makes my (penniless) head spin, it IS something to think about. Especially, as you said, given the amount of time we spend in bed AND the fact that most of us are willing to drop that much on a fancy computers and other gadgets.

And I agree with you on wanting plain, classic bedding--fluffy, soft whites, beiges, and creams and if I want a punch of color and texture blankets and throw pillows would do the trick.

thanks again!

Don't get me wrong...the room looks good and I think it's far better than the before. Maybe it's just not my taste? I don't know...but for me, the vintage feeling iron bed, the side tables, the lamp and the vintage fan seem so out of place with the new modern elements--the graphic bedding, the white shelves and storage boxes, and the industrial filing cabinet. I feel like the room can't make up it's mind about what it wants to be...

and @dirce, I don't think the carpet-rug is gone, rather it's the same small rug next to the bed that looks like carpet from the perspective of the first picture. Which is a nod to the fact that from a better angle and with better light the after picture is already a load better than the before.

You don't really need a cookie sheet, just something flat for the greens to freeze on so that they don't clump together before you put them into zip locks. I've used plates, platters, and tupperware lids. Anything flat that you can fit into your freezer.

Funny enough, I recently moved into an apartment with a ridiculously narrow oven, so I had to buy a couple small and narrow cookie sheets which DO fit into my narrow side-by-side fridge/freezer.

I think my main issue with the room is the white carpeting. I think if it was a nice hardwood underfoot the room would look eons better and more cohesive. Even if the wood floors didn't extend into that tiled (linoleum?) entryway.

My first that was also about the noise. And @ dustinstruckmeyer it's not the noise heard by the rest of the house that would bug me, but the noise while taking a shower might drive me nuts.

I didn't think it was so awful before, and actually the before is more to my style. I agree that some cleaning, paint, and other accessories throughout the room to tie it together could have resulted in a great space.

It's hard to get a feel for the space overall, however, without more pictures. It might look much cooler in context.

On another note--I'd also be a bit concerned with how the galvanized steel will hold up. Under "normal" weather conditions outdoors it should take a very long time to rust, but I wonder how it would fare in the shower? But hey--what do I know? And if it works for this family, that's great.

I've seen pink bathrooms that managed to look great despite the odds, but from the looks of the photo the pepto-bismol hue would have been a bit too much for me too. All in all, I think it looks fantastic! I had no idea that refinishing tile was a thing.

My only caveat with the after is that it doesn't have any personality anymore. Like the previously commenter, I personally would have left the black trim too. I hope you have/have plans to put some life back into it! A punchy shower curtain would look great.

Really nice job with the makeover, the blue is so much lovelier than the yellow.

I agree with the suggestions about the shelves--a few added items would make it look fuller, more complete and improve the space one notch further. Maybe paint the shelves white or blue and add some white or even red storage. That'd hopefully help wrangle the stuff on the floor and the windowsill. Tall, narrow baskets might work--though it might be difficult if the shelves aren't very deep.

As RayRay mentioned above, some of these would be really perfect for desserts. My grandmother had sets almost identical to #s 4 and 9. I don't ever remember drinking normal things from them, but I do remember enjoying a lot of desserts served in them: Jello, ice cream, milkshakes, floats, parfaits, fruit salad, etc.

Our style is similar to Jonnifers. This year the food will be served buffet style from our dining room table, and we have a larger table set up in our sun room. I'm looking to set up our table in similar way to the 8th picture, though with autumn decor and colors, probably small candles, bowls of apples and pears, and small pumpkins. The basic idea is for it to look elegant, warm, and homey, but without any tall or cumbersome objects. I hate it when the centerpiece obstructs your view of the person across from you, or when you have to be afraid that you're going to knock something over.

Looking at her profile, Liliana clearly has some sort of investment in this company/designer.
How silly. Which is kind of how i'd describe this. Quite expensive as well.
Also--would there be an issue if you had books smaller than the height of the shelves?

For me, simple floating shelves and discrete bookends achieves a great minimalist look for a reasonable price.

Drying Rack as Christmas Tree | Apartment Therapy San Francisco

So, as another commenter did as well, I checked out the source website. It's from last Christmas, posted in early January, and here's what the website says:
"By the time our power came back on after the ice storm, Christmas was so soon that we decided to forego a Christmas tree. But it didn't seem right to have no ornaments, no lights, nothing under which to place gifts... so we repurposed our drying rack for a couple of weeks, and it worked beautifully. The only thing missing was the evergreen scent, and if we ever needed to do this again we'd invest in a nice pine-scented candle for full effect. (PineSol just wouldn't cut it.)

You might be wondering where we dried clothes while our rack was playing tree. That's what doorknobs, backs of chairs, and windowsills are for!"
----

If I were this couple, I'd be seriously peeved with how AT made the situation seem...
