I like the blue center one toward the bottom that looks like an ice chest.

And obviously, I can't afford it. But it's nice to know someone out there is pushing the envelope on kitchen appliances. I often feel forced to sacrifice functionality for older fashioned aesthetics, because I really don't care for all the plastic that's built into more modern versions of toasters, refrigerators, ovens, blenders...

I say, at least if Meneghini is making these now, someone may be making a more affordable version of it by the time I'm old enough to be equipping my forever kitchen. Or a girl can dream anyway.

I grew up in Wisconsin but now live in the Bay Area, and I find that actually people in our country's middle often seem more in tune with local eating than foodies on either coast. While many of us in cities tend to have more access to the latest information and academic debate on food politics, people in communities that are actually located near farmland are often more intuitive about buying local food, dairy and meat.

This a great post about how urban/rural communities can learn fromeach other; and the flow of best practices is not always unidirectional.

I'm not a fan of fondant or perfectly iced cakes either (they always seem to be trying too hard, or something), and while I like the aesthetic alternation of a cake that's frosted leisurely, I think the above application works better with WHIPPED CREAM. Or as I like to call it, summer frosting.

The bare walled cake with the high pile up there seems like it would make for some dry bites, so I'd just try to get it a bit more evenly thick. Or opt for the sugar crusted trick mentioned by Judi.

I always use a bobby pin, and think it works very well.

We use the large coffee "cans" from Trader Joe's because about as often as they get stinky, we go through 2 lbs. of coffee. Since the cans aren't recyclable, this is a way to get a little extra life out of them before sending them into the trash. They have a tight fitting lid and they hold a good amount of scraps--we're vegetarians and seem to peel, chop, what-have-you an unfathomable quantity of produce.

I really want to use recipe cards, they are terrific in principle, but somehow they seem so impractical. I don't have a good place for a box, nor do I often rifle through the recipes I've saved...Creature of habit, I suppose.
