I'm thinking of cutting a piece of cabinet grade 3/4" plywood to the exact dimensions of the the shelving unit. Paint to match, or wallpaper or choose a groovy accent color, then attach to the back side of the unit on perimeter and at cross divisions with wood screws. This should very significantly increase the structural strength of the unit, and force it into square. Depending on the materials used in the unit, you might also need to add anchors into the it at corresponding screw locations. Then hang with a french cleat or the cabinet hanging track system from Ikea, as others have already suggested by attaching directly into the wall studs with longish wood screws. Please don't use sheetrocking screws. They are very brittle and easily snap and break. Ikea's track hanging system will be visable, so I'd really recommend the french cleat. You'll need to have a spacer strip at the bottom to keep it plumb.

How about an automotive paint shop as another refined and professional looking treatment?

If it were me, I'd take them all apart, get the metal pieces done, and treat the wood separately. You could clean and lightly "sand" the wooden pieces with 0000 grade steel wool and some paint thinner (go with the grain). Let it dry well, and then do a couple go overs with danish oil...and then finally a light coat of butcher's wax, buff...and then reassemble. The wood will have a very natural appearance without a goopy plasticy polyurethane feel.

SBMODERN is so correct. If you don't address it now before you move in, you're gonna have to move out later at the very least room by room to tackle the job down the road. It is a MESSSSSSY DUSSSSSTY crappy mess dealing with drywall. Do it now, or pretend forever more that it doesn't bother you.

I LOVE captain's chairs. It's usually just my partner and I dining together most days, and we have a big huge wingback chair apiece pulled up to the dining table. It's great for comfort and hanging around the table even when the meal is done.

When more people come to dinner, we just unstack chairs from the corners and shove in as many people as we can.

For everyday, go for comfort, for parties, think high density.
