This post misses some very important points.

I can't double check it because the Vlassic website doesn't list ingredients, but I believe they have food colouring. The processing makes them grey. Blech.

If you pickle in brine as opposed to vinegar, the pickles are probiotic. They are very beneficial for your gut flora, and most of us could use the help.

I wrote more about that here http://ruthsrealfood.blogspot.com/search/label/fermented%20foods

And the homemade ones are soooo good. Going to make a new batch today!

I love sliced garlic!!

First of all, depending on the dish, it sometimes adds a lot both to the tase and visually.

Also, I hate cleaning the garlic press, especially if I only need one clove, so it saves time.

To get the health benefit from the garlic you need to let it sit on your cutting board for a few minutes when you slice rather than crush.

Blogged about it here http://ruthsrealfood.blogspot.com/2011/07/cooking-for-beginners-garlic.html

I would knock it before I tried it because I would never try it.

We all have our guilty pleasures. You wanna eat cheatos, (Freudian typo) go ahead and knock yourself out. But if you taking the trouble to cook real, tasty, nourishing food instead of the chemical soup most people are eating, why insert an ingredient like cheetos?
Plus, I think cheetos are gross. Now, doritos, that's my chemical of choice.

Oops, so it is vegan week. I agree with Orchid64. I think it is important to look at the tried and true diets that sustained traditional cultures for generations. That's why I avoid high fructose corn syrup, food colourings, and anything else my grandmother and yours didn't grow up with.
Similarly, no traditional diet that I've ever heard of is vegan, because (in my opinion and obviously not everyone will agree) it can't sustain life cradle to grave over generations. Traditional cultures didn't have modern medicine and supplements to bail them out.
That said, a vegan diet full of fresh, very high quality food may be better that eating the typical, all-processed diet.

Is it vegan week or have you turned into thevegankitchn.com? Practically every post for the last couple of days has the word vegan in it.

if you don't see any issues with HFCS, maybe this will be informative http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM
It's a very interesting video that explains how HFCS is metabolised differently by the body.

Annie, you had difficulty finding great Hanukkah decorations on the web because decorating isn't part of the Hanukkah tradition. On the other hand, I've seen artists do wonderfully beautiful interpretations of menorahs.
As for the wreath, I'll bet if played a word association game with 100 people of various faiths and threw out the word "wreath", almost all of them would say Christmas. I certainly would.
Happy upcoming holidays everyone!

What about ghee/clarified butter? I doesn't have the liquid that regular butter does, so I imagine it'd work well in a pastry. Has anyone tried it?

Lesley, it's the adjective "pokey" which has negative connotations, not London. What did you want them to call it, a pokey Parisian flat? It's in... um... London.

I bailed on the pictures, even though they look interesting. The slideshow doesn't work and the new format is annoying. Too much clicking and scrolling :(

The dining room table and chairs aren't my personal taste, but other than that, it's great. The picture of the sofa with the bed in the background looks like it came out of a journal (meant as a compliment).
Enjoy your home!

Here's an example of a better presentation of "clutter?" (in my opinion). There's white space around the clutter. Pic was taken from Desire to Inspire.

A space with a lot of stuff can be arranged in a way that is restful to the eye, or in a way that is tiring. Like many others, I like the style you're going for, but I find the many objects tiring.

Look at that first picture. There are two very pretty pieces of furniture on either side of the fireplace, and they are filled with objects. That's not a problem. But then there are more objects on top of the furniture, which detracts the eye from the shape of the furniture itself. Also, there is too much going on between over the fireplace. All of it together is too much.

Another example in the same picture. You have both a table behind the sofa, and then another small side table beside that. I'd remove the small table (or the big one). Both are two much.

I think you have the basis for a fantastic apartment, if you leave a few empty spaces for the eye to rest.
Good luck. Thanks for sharing.
